Comments Thread For: Derry Mathews Accused Of Avoiding Ismael Barroso

Ismael Barroso’s promoter Greg Cohen has accused Britain’s Derry Mathews of avoiding his Venezuelan lightweight.

Mathews, the former WBA Interim Lightweight title holder, had been scheduled to face Barroso in 2015. The Liverpudlian vacated his strap to go for the bigger prize of the full WBO title when he faces fellow Brit and reigning champion Terry Flanagan on February 13 at Liverpool’s Echo Arena.

Derry has had many wars and bad losses so who are we to say he can't fight Flanagan for the WBO full world title in Liverpool. Them WBA interim titles are disposable like tissue paper. It's just a number 1 contender poker chip.

Why would he fight him for an interim belt when he's been offered a shot at the full world title?

I think this claim by this Cohen guy is complete nonsense lol. Fight Flanagan in your hometown in a main event for more money and credibility or fight this Barroso guy for less money, less credibility and on someones undercard. It was a no brainer why Derry chose Flanagan.

All that makes sense, and Barroso is dangerous too. Why get KO'd for less money?

Who fights for less money in a lesser fight for a lesser title against a lesser opponent?

You have to be a bit special (not in a good way) to do that or to criticise a fighter for taking a better fight.
