  • Comments Thread For: Kovalev's Coach: Jean Pascal is Shot, Roach Can't Help!

Brooklyn, New York - On January 30th, light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev will once again travel to Canada to defend his WBO/WBA/IBF world titles in a rematch against local superstar Jean Pascal.

Kovalev stopped Pascal in a one sided but entertaining fight back March. Not many see a reason for a rematch and would prefer Kovalev to fight Pascal’s countrymen Adonis Stevenson, who holds the WBC title. Boxing politics have stopped the fight from happening and Kovalev’s trainer, John David Jackson, hopes the fight doesn’t go the Mayweather-Pacquiao route.

What's the point of this fight, how does it help Kovalev?

This is when coaches need to keep their mouth shut. If Pascal is shot, why fight him? For the money only?

At least lie about it, say you are taking him seriously. Then when fans say this was a bad win, don't b*tch about it. You just said yourself that he is shot.

Jean Pascal had a rematch clause in the contract for the first fight.

Most people have already written off this fight since Kovalev KO'd him, so maybe they don't feel the need to sugarcoat anything. It'll just be more tape for Kovalev's highlight reel.

I personally believe that Pascal is always dangerous. I don't expect him to be a completely different fighter, but he has the tools to win, assuming he learned from the first encounter. That said, I got Kovalev KO7.

The challenger has a rematch clause against the unified champion? Where did you read that?

Probably here on boxingscene or on ESPN.

Let's not forget, the fight was Kovalev's first decent payday. Pascal is a big draw in Quebec.

I can't find anything about a rematch clause. Can someone link me to evidence that shows Pascal had a rematch clause?

Kathy wouldn't give DiBella a 2 fight option on Glazkov, which is standard for voluntary vs champ, I highly doubt she would give Pascal a rematch clause as the challenger vs Kovalev. She pushed to make this the WBC eliminator so why would she put a wrench in the possible Stevenson fight if Kovalev won? Duva does some weird stuff but I don't think she's ****** enough to give the challenger a rematch clause.
