    Fast vs. Athletic.

What is the difference, if any, between the two?

Hmmm...Fast is just the speed you move at, while athleticism dictates how graceful and precise the movement is and the wider range and ability within that movement...

It's guys like Floyd and Roy who combine the two to look so fast...

You can't really be fast and effective without being athletic...you'd just be a spaz

He's been effective so far.... I don't consider Wilder a "fast" fighter though.... Manny/Roy/Mayweather/Rigo/Loma these are all explosively fast fighters that are able to recruit all the necessary muscles in the blink of an eye to achieve that speed...

Generally an athletic person is good all around at sports, being fast is just one of the many traits that fall under athleticism. Typically you could be fast and not be athletic but to be athletic, you need to be fast amongst many other things. An athletic person can usually excel at any given sport as where someone just fast is limited. Being fast is a great trait to have as an athlete if complimented with great reflexes but speed alone is highly overrated imo. Personally Ive noticed all mainstream sports in the US at least (Baseball, Basketball, Football, Boxing/MMA etc...) require superior reflexes and great eye hand coordination, so when I refer to some one as being athletic, I usually look for these main traits, if they are really fast as well, thats just a perk but depending how fast, it could take them to another level and make them a superior/elite level athlete.

There's a huge difference between just being fast and being athletic. Speed relates to a physical attribute only, like strength or stamina. A fighter can be fast but malcoordinted, like Khan or Wilder, just as a fighter can be strong but oafish.

Athleticism refers more to the neuromuscular system as a whole, how well your mind and body integrate, and how quickly you can assimilate new motor engrams. An athlete might not necessarily be the fastest or most explosive individual, but they'll pick things up extremely quickly and have little problems applying them in a live environment.

True athletes are generally able to excel in more than one sport. Sergio Martinez would be a prime example. Elite level cyclist, near-elite level soccer player, joined boxing at a late age and was still able to get to the top. That's pure athleticism right there.

Fighters like Mayweather and Ward are great athletes as well, as is Chocolatito, though they've applied their athleticism purely to the sport of their calling.
