If there isn't a standing 8 count you can't expect leeway by the ref. You need to take a knee when you are as seriously hurt as Quillin clearly was. If Quillin didn't take a knee because he wasn't of sound mind to make that determination or cuz he's got too big of an ego, as I suspect many fighters are, to take it idk, but he'd have likely saved himself this embarrassing KO by 1 addition to his resume by doing so in my estimation.
The ref coulda given him the count if he determined it was a kd. I don't think the ropes held quillin up tho.

Good stoppage. I like everyone else here would have liked it to have gone on. But it's not our ass on the line if things go **** up. Quillin clearly didn't know where he was.

Was he done? Who knows. But the Stoppage was SHIT at that moment.

              Stop repeating what Paulie said.

How is looking at your opponent with your eyes, with a boxing stance, with your hands up, and starting to slightly bounce on your feet, all while doing this in one spot, means clear stoppage.

It wasn't a KD is the problem like you're saying doe. In fact I think Quillin made so much effort to stay up, to keep his balance as best he could maintain it made that very effort a wasted one ironically. If he'd just shut down & let go like his body wanted him to do right then I think he makes it outta the first round, if he coulda mounted a comeback after that is a whole other story obviously.

Watching live, I thought the ref panicked a bit but on replay it looked like he was just momentarily out of position and then when he got back into position, he took a better look he said nah, 'you're done.' I didn't like it live, but only because I thought he panicked. He did get a good good look, so that's his call

still, in a championship fight/local rivalry... without a knockdown and that much distance between the fighters I can see how someone would question the stoppage. Quillin's eyes are always exaggerated and super wide open during his fights.

but whatever, after seeing the replay and hearing Quillin's slurred speech I think Dock made an OK call. he's the professional.

                    -----

If you remember back to Jacobs-Pirog, when Danny went down in a heap the ref only gave him a 5 count or so...the second Danny made a move to get up, the ref forcefully shoved him back down, straddles him and waves it off.... all while Jacobs was pleading "I'm good!" lol.

I'm not bring it up to question that stoppage, but I always wondered if Jacobs would have made the count ...but, the ref made the call. Maybe the ref saved Jacobs from a beating like the ref tonight saved Quillin. Jacobs got another day, he's still viable, a champ now... and now Quillin will have to get his (if he wants it). Sure a rematch will be explored

If that was the first hard shot then yeah you could say it was early but he'd been getting beaten unfit like a minute and he looked out of it on the replay.

I always find it weird in boxing in those situations where if you go down you get a 15 second rest but if you stay up you lose instantly.

I guess guys are just too out of it to think it through and take a knee.
