Hello John, I was wondering who you thought would have won if Roy Jones and Gerald McClellen had met in the pros (prior to the tragic Benn McClellen fight)?

ICE: I was there when they fought each other at the National Golden Gloves in 1988 and it was definitely one of the best amateur fights I have ever seen. Gerald backed Roy to the ropes a lot during that fight and made it a grueling type fight and came away with the decision.

As professionals, though, I think Roy would respect Gerald a lot more and box one of his more careful fights. Many people forget that Gerald's first two losses as a pro were to good boxers, but guys that were not on the level of Roy as boxers, Ralph Ward and Dennis Milton. I don't think it would be a great fight to watch but I do think that Roy had the speed and skills to beat Gerald by comfortable decision.

People forget that in his prime Roy was one of the smartest and most careful boxers out there. He wouldn't allow a fight with Gerald to be great just because people would wish for that.

Do you know if they fought more than once as amateurs?

What weight did they fight at for the Golden Gloves and did either of them looked hurt or stunned at any point?

I don't know if Jones would of came on top in a battle of moves and punches with McClellan in pro's, as awesome as Jones was back then. McClellan was the ****.

McClellan was an awsome specticle, but he was prone to being out boxed, and I think Roy would have won a decision similar in comfort level to when he fought Hopkins.

I did say in a battle of moves and punches, I meant basically trading with eachother.

RJ and Gerald fought each other at the National GG in early 1988 in Omaha. VERY good fight. Neither was visibly hurt but I was with Gerald and Roy less than 6 weeks later at Sugar Ray Leonard's pre-olympic amp and Gerald couldn't spar because his jaw was still messed up from the fight with RJ. As for the other guy... I dont read this forum regulalarly..what question did u ask me about Peter Manfredo??

There was no video shot of it, sad to say... BUT I do know for a fact that Big Roy (SR) has a tape of RJ and Sugar Ray Leonard sparring back when RJ was getting ready for the olympics. etc
