Comments Thread For: Calzaghe: Roy Jones Jr. Should Have Retired Long Ago

Former super middleweight and light heavyweight champion Joe Calzaghe retired back in 2009, with his undefeated 46-0 record intact, and the boxing great never took a look back.

Many fighters retire every year and eventually return at some point. Even Floyd Mayweather Jr. retired on at least two occasions in the past, only to return to the ring. His third and latest retirement in September is not being taken seriously.

What the **** are you on about? Calzaghe had retired by the time Ward was anywhere near World level.

Indeed. People need to remember Calzaghe retired before any of all that Super Six tournament, and was already campaigning at 175 anyway before he retired and had left SMW when Ward was still fighting 6 or 8 rounders.

Wasn't part of the super 6 thing to fight for his vacated titles after he'd retired?

Same with people wondering why Calzaghe never fought Froch. Well because Calzaghe was considered in the p4p top 10 and retired when Froch hadn't even fought above European level. He was retired before Froch even fought Pascal...

Joe was good stuff and the reasons for retiring make complete sense and like Lennox it's good to see the temptation of money not getting the better of him. With out doubt one of the best we've produced and a good guy , had a right laugh with him in a departure lounge one time , a level headed , honest and funny guy I don't get the occasional hate for him.

Maybe he should have but then again, if he loves boxing then why not keep doing it?

It's great having former glories but you have to be happy in the present. If he can enjoy his life and get paid for doing what he loves and knocking some bums out in Russia then fair play to him, crack on.

I wouldn't like to see him get in with anyone dangerous though. When you're getting seriously hurt then maybe hang them up but i can't see a problem with what he's doing now.

Getting hit for a living is not good for your long term health. Especially getting KO'd like Jones has been after the 2nd Tarver fight. He fights because he needs the money, which is sad because his legacy has already been written. Now he just tarnishes it. Image if he would have retired after the first Tarver fight?

I would have loved to see a rematch with V. Klitschko and Lennox. I think another round VK would have got him.
