I think its because we fans have clung on to the idea of the 'lineal' title as the last title that actually means anything in the sport.

But we sometimes forget that even that can get devalued to the point of meaninglessness.

I agree, he's welcome to weigh anything within the limit...except his opponent should be able to weigh in at the full limit in any sanctioned fight for the title.

He is a middleweight champ, but he has no right telling 160 pound middleweights that they cannot fight at that weight. If Hagler and Hopkins were in their prime now, Canelo and Cotto would not be able to tell them that they cannot fight at 160.
