Comments Thread For: Francisco Vargas Explains Win, Miura Wants Rematch

LAS VEGAS — Mexico’s undefeated Francisco Vargas rose from his first career knockdown to capture the World Boxing Council super featherweight title Saturday by dethroning Japanese champion Takashi Miura with a ninth-round TKO.

In his first world title bout, the 30-year-old endured a fourth-round knockdown and a right eye nearly swollen shut to seize the crown when referee Tony Weeks halted the bout after 1:31 of the ninth round.

        Great Fight

That was a great fight. I told a lot of people that the Miura vs Vargas fight was going to be the best fight on the card.

They both delivered. They both have great skill and great heart. I'm not sure there are many fighters who will go past 6 rounds with either of these two.

Both stocks went way up. Can't wait to see Miura again on TV and in the states. Hopefully we get to see more Japanese fighter more. He represented himself and his country well.

It was great to see a guy like Vargas go from prospect to Champion. Can't wait to see who he fights next. I know that there not in the same division but I would love to see a Vargas vs Jorge Linares fight.

Can't wait to see these guys rematch each other. This has a Barrera vs Morales or Marquez vs Vazquez fights written all over it.

Greatness we saw last night!!!! And New Champion of the World Francisco Vargas!!!!

great fight. Vargas came on strong in the last round of the fight. the knockdown looked like the guy wouldnt get up.

after what seemed like 100 clean shots to the face I knew it was over. I think it was a good stoppage the guy looked out of it on his feet.

now they can rematch as well and they should. both take 5 months off and do a rematch in spring

Great fight and i'd watch a rematch. If the rematch goes differently, it could be a great rivalry. These guys are good together.
