Sure, why not.
After Cotto's voluntary defense against Geale, team Cotto contacted K2 to negotiate a step aside deal that would delay the mandatory fight and allow the Canelo fight to happen first. They agreed to pay Golovkin $800,000, for him to step aside from his mandatory position to allow the Canelo fight. And now Cotto is reneging on that deal.
It's pretty obvious that Cotto/Roc Nation only used the belt as leverage in the negotiating table with Canelo. It was there way of saying "look, I'm champion, so we deserve X amount of dollars" and now that the fight is a done deal, they absolutely don't give a flying **** ass about the belt, it was only about the money to Cotto. It was a calculated move by Team Cotto from the start since he now has absolutely no obligation to fight Golovkin should he win and he doesn't have to pay the step aside money and sanctioning fee, at least that's what he's trying to do but K2 is taking legal action. From what it seems, the agreement they made was legally binding so likely Roc Nation/Cotto is going to have to pay the $800,000 regardless, win, lose or draw. The smaller chunk of money was typical from a high profile championship fight, where Cotto is going to make $20 million+ ($300k sanctioning fee, capped off), which of course Cotto's promoters have always paid before no problem. His only issue here is NOT paying the step aside money to Golovkin.
I'm sorry but this whole situation would have been avoided months ago if Cotto would have dropped the belt, either before or after Geale. He still could have fought Canelo with no obligations to his mandatory and thus no step aside necessary. However, the belt was very important to Cotto so he could use it as leverage against Canelo in order to secure a higher percentage of the purse. Well, if you're going to do that, then there are obligations to that belt and sanctioning body, thus the hot mess now created from his choices to squeeze a few extra dollars from Canelo.
hahaha but on a serious note........yes that might have been the primary cause of it and I am fully aware of every you wrote...but what YOU fail to see is the secondary re precautions of his actions....and that is what I am interested in.....Comment

You asked me to explain so I explained. Don't ask if you don't want text.
There are no "secondary re precautions of his actions". Not sure what you're looking for here. A revolution in boxing because Cotto reneged on his step aside deal? Yeah right. Plus, even if it were Cotto "standing up against injustice", like it's been pointed out Cotto is so far advanced in his career and is going to retire in a fight or two most likely so he can afford to burn bridges. Tell some young kid's promoter to not pay sanctioning fees and see what happens. No one is going to do that.Comment
