1-MAYPAC-FIGHTNIGHT-TRAPPFOTOS-5238By Chris Williams: The baddest man in the planet Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) says he’ll be sticking around to go after his 50th win of his career. He’s been saying that he would hang up the gloves after his fight this September, but on Wednesday, Mayweather said he’ll be fighting on for his 50th bout, which will take place in 2016.

Mayweather hasn’t commented on who he would be looking to fight for his 50th fight, but it might be Manny Pacquiao if he plays his cards right and shows Mayweather some kind of acknowledgement for him beating him last May. Pacquiao might also have to show that he’s ready to come in at the nice price for the rematch by agreeing to something that will make Mayweather happy.

In this case, the magic words that Pacquiao could say is ‘I’ll accept a 70-30 cut of the revenue.’ It was 60-40 last time, but with Pacquiao’s loss and his subsequent injury excuse for his loss, I see that number going down to 70-30 if he wants to fight Mayweather a second time, and I have a feeling that Pacquiao badly wants a rematch.

“I need an Andre Berto or Karim Mayfield to get me ready for my 50th bout,” Mayweather said. “Everyone is saying they want to see No.50.”

There it is. Mayweather telling the fans that he’ll be looking to get a tune-up fight in September against the likes of Berto or Mayfield to get him ready for his big fight next year where Mayweather will be looking to improve his record to 50-0 to break Rocky Marciano’s 49-0 record.

A couple of other fighters – Julio Cesar Chavez and Ricardo Lopez – have broken the record already, but they didn’t fight the kinds of guys that Mayweather did throughout his career. There was a lot of record padding fights that those two Mexican stars fought to get to break Marciano. In contrast, Mayweather has done it against quality fighters for years and years.

Mayweather vs. Pacquiao 2 will bring in a lot of that good clean cash for Mayweather. But it needs to be marketed right this time with the fighters using more time to tour because I think there could be fewer buys next time around due to Pacquiao’s poor showing and his excuse about being injured. I do believe it’s a fight that can ultimately top 3 million buys, but they’re going to need to make the boxing public forget about Pacquiao’s poor showing last time out.

Mayweather was somewhat surprised recently at learning that the WBO welterweight title that he won off of Pacquiao will be fought over by Tim Bradley and Jessie Vargas in their fight on June 27th. Mayweather says he never even received the WBO 147 pound title from the World Boxing Organization. He thinks that was a very strange move by the WBO to let Bradley-Vargas fight for a title that he never even received after he whipped Pacquiao to win the belt.

“I got belts that I would like to relinquish that I haven’t yet relinquished, and I haven’t yet got my WBO belt,” Mayweather said. “Before I can relinquish something, I have to receive it. I’m just saying. I’ve yet to receive my WBO belt. How is someone about to fight for something that I have yet to receive? Those kinds of things happen in boxing,” Mayweather said.

The quote in that article is real, seemed like a troll comment when he said it back in June but since he fought Berto maybe he was serious.

Saw this coming a mile off, no way he retires 49-0. Announces retirement, 'cherish the memory peoples' then several months he'll make a return. I hope he loses whoever the opponent is.

That article is almost half a year old, but nevertheless, of course he'll be back for a 50th fight. I could definitely buy him retiring for real after that, but he isn't hanging the gloves up for good before an historical 50th fight.
