They mean a lot more on depending who you beat to get them.
They mean even more on the level of competition you defend them against.

They don't really mean **** to future HOFs who have already established their legacies.
So how do you win them when the champ refuses to fight you?

So you are saying Cotto needed to win the mw belt to be solidified?

Well Cotto has paid the sanctioning fees for the belts in the past, so he obviously cared about them.

But belts don't matter when you don't want to face your mandatory.

Cotto didn't need the MW belt to secure his HOF status, it's a nice bonus, but he didn't need it. If he was still establishing his legacy, this would be a non-story because he would have paid.

This is Boxing. Anybody who has decades invested into this sport knows how this works. The lesser side gives in to the bigger sides demands and beats them for legitimacy. This has happened for decades upon decades..... this is nothing new.

Nobody is talking about demands though. This is about the belts. If Cotto does not need the 160 belt to solidify his legacy, why fight for it in the first place? Spare me the excuse about being 4 division champ because if belts dont matter, being champion doesnt either. So why fight for it at all?

As of now - its still Cotto. That may change come Nov 22. He will either beat Canelo and remain north of 154 or drop to Jr MW. He may lose and then Canelo will be the man...

Like it or not, Cotto has a greater win at MW than GGG does at MW - and that's ALL that matters.

Everyone can play MMQB - but the fact of the matter is that 60% of this board said that Martinez would win and Martinez was the betting favorite, I believe 3 to 1.

Cotto MOVED UP and beat the MW champion - so he did more in one fight than GGG has done in his entire career - he moved up and beat the consensus #1 fighter in the division.

Where did I say anything about him wanting to be a 4 division champion? Did I say that? Can you point that out me please?
Everyone knows it was personal between Martinez and Cotto. Cotto pounced on a Martinez that was weak and he wanted to take those belts off him out of spite.
Look up the history leading up to that fight.

All fighters care about belts. .if ur a named fighter u uses it to ur advantage during negotiations vs a side or b side. .Cotto did care about belts ..reason he fought Martinez. .reason he got the upper hand on negotiations vs Canelo. .plus imo he wanted da belt to bait Floyd into a rematch for the MW title. .bUT he got another $ fight with Canelo which guaranteed a big purse...Canelo also says he doesn't care about belts yet he pay day fee to fight for da belt....cotto had no intention to fight 3g ..he just pay day 800k so 3g step aside n let da Canelo fight happens. .had Cotto faces 3G there would be no Canelo fight right now or never...they all care but why pay day fee if ur gonna vacate after da W...plus if Cotto goes back to 154 bet he'll fight for one of Floyd vacant belts.

Like it not, Martinez avoided ggg to face cotto. Looks like ggg beat Martinez without even having to punch him. Looks like hes gonna do the same to cotto.

It wasnt personal, cotto wanted to make history by doing guess what?

Winning a belt in a 4th division. He cares about the belts, hes just afraid of the beating he will take.
