Lineal has become a joke. It used to mean someone who has earned accolades as the top guy at that division by fighting who matters ... now it's just something that can be cherry picked from aging faded champs, and held hostage at catchweights.

The WBC is not the Lineal title

Lineal titles can only be lost, if a fighter leaves the division,retires or loses

Ring belt is not the Lineal title although they are sometimes the same


Cotto is still the Lineal 160 champion and Ring champion

Are you talking about Cotto being the Lineal Middleweight Champion? He's the lineal middleweight champion because he beat sergio martinez, who beat kelly pavlik who beat jermaine tailor who beat Bernard Hopkins etc.

Lineal titles are worthless since there is no mandate to defend them in any time frame or against any opponent of note.

You can win a lineal belt off a guy that is 40 and hasnt fought in 2 years who won it off another guy who is 40 and completely shot and so on.

eg Briggs was HW lineal champ beating Foreman who had fought 3 nobodies in 3-4 years since beating Moorer and was stripped of every other title.

A lineal title is interesting to follow but the issue now is that lineal champion usually holds an ABC belt. Then the other good fighters have to go through that ABC ranking to even fight for the intangible lineal belt.

The Ring does a decent job at crowning a lineal champion but at the end of the day it's the fight game. Even when there was a single belt you will find cases of the belt skipping around the best fighter in the division to give other people paydays before the true #1 in the division got his shot.

The lineal championship is not about who's the best in the division. It's only a title that signifies the man who beat the man all the way back to the inception of each division. I guess it should also be noted that a championship and a title are two different things, since that whole concept seems lost on many. It may not hold the same esteem today as it once did, but it's still a part of boxing history. People saying lineal has become a joke because they still don't understand it. The lineal title is the only title to have remained the same way from inception. It hasn't become anything. It's not about who's the best in the division all the time, it's about being the man who beat the man before u. If there is no man before u it's about being the number one guy in the division who be at the clear cut number 2 guy. Just because you don't like who has the title doesn't mean it's a joke. In fact it's the only title that's actually free of politics or sanctioning body antics. Does it mean the best guy always has it? No. But it hasn't become anything. It's the same as it has always been.
