  • Comments Thread For: Canelo Dismisses Comparison of Common Cotto Foes

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez will never be a writer’s dream in terms of producing great quotes, but the 25-year old boxer certainly gets credit for being a live-for-today type of guy.

“Today” for the former super welterweight champ is all about preparing for his November 21 titanic clash with World middleweight champion Miguel Cotto. The two meet at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, with HBO Pay-Per-View to televise the highly anticipated clash, which takes place at a maximum catchweight of 155 lbs.

Good on him. Stats don't mean anything in the ring.

In all honesty, these two are fighting to be a Duck

This fight would be more interesting if it was part of a legit MW tournament, Lemieux / GGG winner against Cotto / Canelo.

Sure, they have a belt, and absolutely, neither deserve it. Both are gaming s system. But in a brilliant stroke, GGG has made himself mandatory for he winner of the fight.

The winner gets to be the ***** who ducked GGG (in Cotto's case it will be yet again, and in Canelo's case, the bravado that is very much part of him is exposed).

They'll make excuses, but no one will believe them. Cotto will claim its financial, as if picking Geale was a windfall. Canelo will complain about being too small, coming from a guy who is fighting a guy who is probably too small and talking about fighting another who is absolutely, too small.

I say this as someone who as a fan of the sport tends to root for Puerto Rican fighters - the rivalrly has always been overstated, and even more so for this fight in particular.

In the same breath, event handlers reference "Trinidad-de la Hoya" and "PR vs. Mexico always bring fireworks/You're always guaranteed action.."

If Cotto-Alvarez produces great action, it's because they're both great action fighters. The media is making a big deal out of the rivalry because most writers are too fkn lazy to do anything but continue to take the guided tour.

The fighters repeat the rhetoric but I never got the sense that either one really gives a ***** about the other's nationality... which is the way it should be. In the end. it's about the fight.

Mexico vs Puerto Rico is a good rivalry.

Mexico is an independent country with a long history of boxing.
PR is a territory of the U.S. Like Guam & other territories.

But the rivalry is a long one.

                Warriors on both sides!

I can see why Jake brought it up. For such a small "country". PR has produced a lot of great champions. P4P, person for person more than the Philippines by far. Maybe more than Mexico, will have to reasearch that someday.

Cotto is a great fighter. I bet 500 USD on Canelo.
Postol cost me 300. I underestimated him.
Floyd beating many put money back into the pot.

                I think this is a 50/50 fight.

                May the best man win.

They have been building this fight for some time. A future HOF bound PR fighter vs a young mexcian warrior..... how is that not screaming PR vs MEX???

If Canelo loses, would that regress his career? Especially since Cotto has been getting alot of flak. If Cotto loses, does that mean that his reign with Roach has been what people has said it's been?

Those are just some of the questions that are gonna be answered on Nov 21st. Also, especially since that dud of a super fight earlier in the year (imo I don't even actually blame floyd for that... you know what you're gonna get with him), this is a fight imo that's gonna have fireworks from start to finish. Canelo has said that he's gonna step it up and put pressure. We all know Cotto comes to fight.

But no... cuz according to you..... it's about the fight.

Not sure what I can say outside of repeating myself... neither fighter makes as big a deal of the rivalry as does the media. Because they both offer so little in the way of worthwhile quotes, that storyline gets told... and repeated.

It's a boxing rivalry, I don't deny that. But as many times as you ask both fighters, they will tell you "It's just another fight to me." Their words, not mine.
