No, he wasn't trying to cash out. But he had no intention on fighting Golovkin. It was a fake, unrealistic offer...he just wanted to run to the media and say that Golovkin turned him down.

Ward knew a fight vs Golovkin was never going to happen because he's very aware of the middleweight division and knows Golovkin would rather get a possible fight in with Canelo or Cotto, and he knows that Froch/JCC Jr. were big time pay days.
This is why Ward's first fight was at a catch weight of 172. When Ward came back he probably already made his mind up to move to 175. The fight with GGG wasn't going to happen, but he figured he would respond/call them out regardless because he has no reason to be afraid and he wants to show himself as such to fans. I honestly think Ward doesn't care about GGG in terms of fighting him, because he knew from the beginning it wasn't going to happen. Now, if GGG and his team had really been up for the fight, he would probably be like, "Sure", but it is what it is.
That offer to GGG was never going to happen anyways, because Ward was already preparing to move up and he knew GGG was collecting a belt from Lemieux/is preparing himself to take on Canelo/Cotto winner (well it might not happen anymore) or Andy Lee/Saunders. Maybe even Quillin will fight Golovkin now, as he's somewhat decent in terms of popularity.

His challenge to GGG to fight him at that time was not a serious challenge. GGG was already signed to fight Lemieux and then would be fighting the Canelo-Cotto winner. GGG had to go through with the Lemieux fight and he wasn't about to give up his dream of being the lineal middleweight champ to fight Ward on Ward's terms. If Ward's offer to fight was sincere then where were the details of the offer? How much was GGG supposed to get paid and where was the fight supposed to happen? It was a BS challenge intended to make it appear that GGG was afraid to fight Ward. Did Ward then line up a fight with someone in GGG's class ? No, he moved to 175 and tried to get unranked 168 pounders to fight him at 175. Ward has done nothing significant in the last 4 years and he has hardly fought at all. Meanwhile GGG is knocking out 4 middleweight contenders a year. GGG is the fighter making beautiful boxing history right now. Ward is doing lots of talking but very little fighting and no fighting at all against the best boxers in his weight class. So now Ward is supposed to fight Kovalev within the next 18 months. I don't think he will ever fight Stevenson or Kovalev. Today's Ward is a cherry picker. A long time ago Ward fought and beat the best fighters his weight. That Ward has been replaced by a Haymon managed Ward who no longer takes risks and fights other high ranked contenders or champions his weight.Comment

The answer is simple, Ward knows he doesn't have to fight GGG because of current situations the only thing he is trying to do is mix the pot of racially motivated fans THAT and he is doing the obvious thing of trying to stay relevant by mentioning bigger names than him, simple as that!Comment
