I know, I know, this is quite obvious. But what the hell, let’s just talk about this one. It is not always that we see intense rivalry between 4 elite fighters in the same weight division. “The Baby-Faced Assassin” Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik “El Terrible” Morales, Manny “Pacman The Destroyer” Pacquiao, and Juan Manuel “Dinamita” Marquez. There’s so much hype going on between these fighters that any fight involving 2 of the 4 will certainly gather much energy and emotions among the fans and the fighters as well.
MAB-EM I,II,III
I think no other Latino boxing rivalry will ever surpass this one. There is always a lot of pride and honor at stake when these two meet so we always get what we want, both fighters going to war. So much drama and action that all of their fights proved to be best-sellers in television ratings and earnings. The only thing that sort of blemished this rivalry is the disrespect Erik showed in their last bout. But regardless of that incident, this will still stand as one of those epic rivalries fans will always cheer and talk about. MAB-EM IV??? Maybe…

A fight that propelled new blood into stardom and almost sent a boxing icon into retirement. This is undoubtedly the biggest break in Manny Pacquiao’s young career. He outperformed a very well known boxing legend and showcased his tremendous speed and power. But of course, this wouldn’t end without any excuse at all. Barrera’s loss was because of so many distractions when he was still training. Fires, brain surgery became the highlight of his excuse and told us that it was not Barrera who fought Pacquiao during that fight. That it was a different Barrera fighting in the ring. In the end, Manny was able to snatch his People’s Featherweight Crown and make a name for himself in the International boxing community. As many have said, this fight was like the Barrera of today versus the young Barrera (Pacquiao).

Freddie Roach did not want this fight to happen because he knows that Juan Manuel was a very dangerous fighter and knows his boxing very well, not to mention he has the best counter-punching ability in all of boxing. And after coming off a big fight against MAB, Roach thought that this match was too quick for Manny to accept. But the young and aggressive Pacquiao would not let this one pass him. With relatively unknown Marquez holding two different versions of the title and Manny holding the People’s Featherweight title, the winner of this bout could have easily gained the clear recognition as the Best Featherweight in boxing today. But then it ended up in a split draw. And goint into the score cards, we could have seen one of the most lopsided scoring in the history of boxing. The 115-110 score cards for each fighter was just a case of poor scoring. It was close fight and it could have easily gone either way. What I mean is, the draw was fine, but the scoring, questionable. The rematch could have been a great rubber match, with both knowing each other’s style and both knowing what the other fighter can bring unto the ring. We’re just going to be sorry since JMM backed out of the fight. I just hope HBO offers Marquez a little bit more, considering he’s the champ, so that we can go on with the rematch. Everybody wants this so I think HBO will be able to get good returns to cover whatever cost they will have incurred because of the purse. This would be another classic, exciting match.
And then there goes the other featherweights outside of the 4 fighters. Rodney Harrison and Injin Chin are champions but are easily overshadowed by their counterparts, two of them non-title holders (Manny and Erik). But both are exciting players and should shine if they are given the chance to break the chain being held by these foursome.
