Comments Thread For: DeGale, Blackwell Spar Tough For Upcoming Fights

LONDON - British middleweight champion Nick Blackwell says regular sparring sessions with IBF world super-middleweight champion James DeGale have more than prepared him for his November 14 title defence against Elliott Matthews and that there's nothing the unbeaten challenger can show him in Bristol that he won't have seen before.

Blackwell meets Matthews, his third southpaw opponent on the trot, at the City Academy, but spars with DeGale, a world-class southpaw, have left him feeling buoyant about the task ahead.

Nick Blackwell is a tough kid who's had nothing handed to him but been made to learn this game the hard way. As a virtual novice he accepted a fight with Martin Murray and went straight at him, no fear, getting stopped in five but showing promise and great attitude. He's developed well since then and his upset come-from-behind stoppage of capable John Ryder was a very good win. Yes, he should now have too much for Elliott Matthews but what he says in this article smacks a little of complacency imo and that's the opposite of the mindset that's brought Blackwell this far. He needs to keep it real at all times. If his focus is 100% Nick Blackwell can earn good money in this game and maybe grab himself a bit of glory too. But nothing less than 100% will do.

Saw this kid once fighting in Malta when he was not even a pro. The event was a semi-pro event. Nick lost the fight on points.
