  • Comments Thread For: Amir Khan Open To The Idea of Going For Olympic Gold

As previously reported, the AIBA - which controls the amateur boxing system and continues to make moves into the pro ranks - is planning to allow professionals to compete in the Olympic games - starting next year.

Several fighters like heavyweight king and Olympic gold medal winner Wladimir Klitschko have embraced the idea, while others like former four division champion and Olympic silver medal winner Roy Jones Jr. believe the AIBA's decision would create a landscape where young amateurs are getting battered by seasoned pros and possibly world champions.

This is madness! What happens if every world Champ wants to win Olympic gold? You can't have that, the professional game would go downhill quick.

He most certainly needs headgear, so I'm not surprised he's all for it.

Would love to see top stars compete for their countries at the Olympics like Klitschko, Kovalev, Pacquiao, Mayweather, Khan, Golovkin, Ward, Crawford. In golfing also the top stars compete in Rio.Would be great awareness for our sport!

I read somewhere it was limited to pros with only a few fights, 10-15 I think so Khan or Wlad or anyone else at that level is unlikely.

Great idea. At least the top guys would not get to choose who they fight and who they avoid

Such a bollocks idea, this should never be allowed. How are amateur fighters ever supposed to aspire to winning olympic gold if they're going to be facing seasoned professionals in the first round? Pathetic, and a disgraceful way to treat the amateur sport.

This. I also think there is a commitment to be involved with AIBA's pro boxing outfit for 2 or 3 years after your Olympic status is rebooted. Basically its a fun lil question to ask successful pros, but the requirements of it would DQ most fighters who've gotten somewhere in the pro game or wouldn't be ideal for someone making piles of money or hoping to make piles of money anytime soon in pro boxing.

Khan gets KTFO after putting on the headgear.
