Manfredo v Calzaghe? What the hell is Peter thinking?

Freddie Roach has informed **********.com that a bout between super middleweight king Joe Calzaghea and Contender Star Peter Manfredo Jr is in the works. According to Roach, Manfredo has already agreed to take the fight in England, but the Contender Group and Team Manfredo must come to a mutual understanding for the bout to take place. More to follow, including a full interview with Freddie Roach.

False. Warren has asked for Manfredo Jr to fight Calzaghe at the Millenium Stadium for July 8, so I don't know where this England bull**** is coming from. They are going to be making the fight through Gary Shaw apparently. Warren thinks that people in the UK will remember Manfredo Jr from 'The Contender' that was shown on ITV1 (Calzaghe's fights are now shown on ITV1).

A small part of me would like to see JC knock him out, but its thoroughly pointless, nobody on earth thinks he can win! probably not even Manfredo.

this fight would not sell out the millenium stadium, this fight wouldnt even sell out Bethnal Green. A fight with RJJ probably would, but Manfredo? what? all the boxing watching public over here have seen of him is losing 3 times in 5 rounders on a tv show. Its got to be JC vs RJJ or Woods, to accumalate enough interest to sell the Millenium out.

Calzaghe has already turned down a Ł1 million offer to fight Woods so lets hope he gets RJJ.

If Manfredo really wants this fight, he's not thinking at all, nor is his camp. I don't think Manfredo could even be competetive at any point in his career against Calzaghe, but this early especially.

To even think that he would turn down a chance to win a belt at Light Heavy and instead opt to fight a no name light Manfredo, is just a frigging joke. You beat Lacy, have two belts, enter the P4P list, make a name for yourself in America. Have America in awe at your performance and then opt to take on Manfredo as your next bout.

To be honest I think Calzaghe is just looking for a big pay day. After the Lacy fight he said as much and I think that probably has a lot to do with the effect his divorce had on his finances. Calzaghe and Warren must believe that a fight with Manfredo will capture the attention of people who dont really follow boxing but know Manfredo through the Contender series. Most boxing fans with any knowledge of whats going on will realise that the fight is a mismatch but Warren probably thinks he can sell this to the casual fans and general public and make a lot of money.

I think Calzaghe's attempt to make a fight with RJJ is also probably based on the amount of money it will generate rather than looking for a genuine challenge as RJJ looks shot now.
