Even if it's too late for GGG, if HBO and K2 are smart they will use GGG to make other fighters (or at least attempt to) into stars.
They've been getting Chocolatito on his undercards and that's a good start. Now they just need to put more fighters and try their chances.
K2 has Usyk, why not give Usyk a try?
Top Rank should try to negotiate something with K2 so they could allow Lomachenko to fight on GGG undercards.
You know I'm trying to get my boy, Loma, some spotlight.
They have to find other ways to create Stars or even Superstars.
If Canelo vs Lara pulled 350,000 viewers, and Golovkin vs Lemieux pulled 150,000, I'd imagine a Canelo vs Golovkin pulling at least 750,000 viewers, assuming there are no other huge PPV fights around the same time.
I think having Mayweather vs Berto, and Canelo vs Cotto so close to Golovkin vs Lemieux tires out the regular fan who would want to purchase PPV fights. I can't imagine most people wanting to buy 2-3 PPV fights in 3 months.
$75 for HD Mayweather vs Berto
$75 for HD Canelo vs Cotto (I think)
$60 for HD Golovkin vs Lemieux
Either way, it's not the starting point we all wanted. I honestly was thinking 250,000 would be a good start, but that didn't happen. I thought it would do better, but then again, I misunderstand just how well known and popular Gonzales is. Boxing fans know him, but the regular fans don't. It's a shame because Gonzales vs Viloria + Golovkin vs Lemieux was such a great match up. If they had managed to sign Stiverne or Jennings vs Ortiz there would have been no doubts on my mind that the card was PPV worthy.
According to reports, last weekends PPV did around 150,000. GGG is approaching 34 years of age, is he too old to become a household name? A PPV star?
A household name is something that is in progression right now. If he ever reaches enough households is always the real question & if he can beat Canelo & Cotto I think the answer is for sure yes.
As for a PPV star, I suppose that depends on what you believe is the definition of PPV star. Cotto was the #3 PPV guy in the game for awhile with 300k-ish numbers as the A side.
I feel its arguable right now to suggest he's within the top 5 or so PPV guys in boxing even off his current numbers. Cuz whats the conversion rate on PPV buys when you're the A side vs when you're the B side? Juan Manuel Marquez, who's done 1M+ numbers as the B side, has done 100k-400k as the A side or arguable A side in the past. So for example if Marcos Maidana, who had 2 PPV's as the B side with 900k+ numbers, was the A side for a PPV does it do 150k GGG vs Lemieux type numbers or better? Idk, but my guess is no if it was vs a guy similar to Lemieux for GGG in not being seen as likely to be competitive or able to win.
I feel like either is possible at the end of the day with the right opponents even if GGG is a older guy. Being an older guy just gives him less time & makes each decision more important & allows for less f#ckups.

um, how do you figure? most of the people who bought golovkin-lemieux probably also bought canelo-lara. even if we were optimistic and just added the canelo-lara and golovkin-lemieux numbers together we'd still only get 500k, so where does the extra 250k+ come from?
600k is the absolute most i could ever foresee golovkin doing. mayweather had more than a decade to build his brand; golovkin's "real career" effectively began when he was already 30. i view him as a sort of "interim face of boxing" until someone younger and just as dazzling comes along
