My issue is with the 20 pound difference talk, I don't like this painting of him like he's david and his opponents are goliaths of some sort. I really wish it was mandatory from the networks that every boxer steps on the scale on the day of the fight, that whole question mark next to your fight weight is ****** considering you are paying someone millions of dollars stepping on a scale for 60 seconds is not much to ask. That would dead all this talk about his size and that of the opponent. We know what his opponents weigh.
The bottom line is Cotto should drop the MW belt if he will not fight at 160.
But I think the difference will likely be closer to 10lbs than 20.
That 10lbs is no big deal really. I think that the official weigh-in is more important than water-weight or rehydration weight. And if a fighter really is killing himself to make weight and then re-hydrate quickly, they will likely fall short against a top fighter.
Someone will figure out they need to move him around and work the body, take the fight late.
The best fighter on the night will likely win that fight.
No idea who that will be.Comment

I agree that catchweights are being abused, but I don't think it's a black/white issue of you either accept catchweights or you don't. Circumstances vary depending on the match-up.
Even merely stating that catchweights are being abused implies that there are some legitimate uses for them.
But I stand corrected, " unjustified " would have been a better word.
And to be fair, I also used the word unnecessary.
I will stand by that, I firmly believe that cw's are completely unnecessary.
Cotto will fight Canelo at Canelo-weight..... he did not try to drag Canelo down to 154 (which is the standard weight for a supposed JMW)..... and he did not try to drag him down to 153 (which is Cotto's last weight)..... Cotto knows that Canelo will weigh 170+, and yet he is is willing to fight a younger, stronger, bigger, man at his best weight.
He will catchweight Golovkin though, beleeeeeeeee dat
GGG fans will call that cw " abuse ", despite the fact that Cotto weighs 153.
But I stand by what I said, imo Cotto should drop the belt if he is not prepared to sack up and fight Golovkin at 160.
Catchweights are completely unnecessary, Cotto could actually fight Golovkin at 160 if he was willing to sack up, like he is willing to sack up to Canelo..... but Cotto weighs 153, he is obviously a JMW..... so if you are going to tell me that catchweights can be justified between guys who fight in different divisions you need to remember that Cotto weighs 153.
My bottom line:
Abolish cw's forever, or accept the one that Cotto has in mind for GolovkinComment

Exactly !
You bet, this fight will obviously determine the best JMW on the planet.
I agree with every single thing you said.Comment

Unfortunately, that's a situation with no definite outcome. We'll never know how a prime Cotto would do against a prime Martinez. We can speculate, but that's about it. Just like the P4P debate. Maybe we did see a sneak peek at how Cotto would have handled Martinez without injuries? But then again, if Martinez was 100% ... would Cotto be able to catch him? That's the downside of boxing, we don't get to see prime fighters going at it sometimes.Comment

I think Cotto is going to dominate Canelo to be honest. Style make fights and in no world a sloww footed, low out put, counter puncher will beat any version of Cotto. Canelo must learn to cut off the ring or this **** will be a white wash worse than the Floyd fight because unlike Floyd Cotto throws and hits like he wants to hurt you and send you to the hospital.Comment
