Comments Thread For: Lemieux: I've Got A lot of Surprises To Show The World

By Jake Donovan - Sure, boxers spend a large portion of their time in training camp isolated from the rest of the world, focused merely on the task at hand. It doesn’t mean they are oblivious to what is said around them.

David Lemieux knew from the moment he agreed to terms for a middleweight title unification bout with Gennady Golovkin that he would be perceived as the heavy underdog. Sure enough, few outside of his own team give him much of a shot at pulling off the upset when they meet this weekend at Madison Square Garden in New York City (Saturday, HBO Pay-Per-View, 9:00 p.m. ET).

Good luck convincing him that he has no chance to win.

“It's not a problem by me,” Lemieux (34-2, 31KOs) says of being viewed as the underdog for the first time in his pro career. “I know who I am. I have a lot of confidence in myself and my team does, also, which is why we're at where we're at right now and a lot of fighters duck a lot of fighters, I don't. Golovkin is a very good fighter, but I am also a very good fighter so it's going to be even better for me when I win.

“To me it makes no difference. I don't really pay attention to the (odds)… I'm focused in the fight, I'm fighting Golovkin in the ring. It’s me against him, and nothing else matters.”

The unification bout kicks off a blitz of significant middleweight action over the next 10 weekends. [Click Here To Read More]

I certainly hope this surprise isn't to pull a Runweather. Even if he tries to win a decision and bore us to death. I think Golovkin still wins, late knockout or decision if he pulls a Runweather.

Making it to a decision would sure be a surprise. As long as he doesn't pull the "I'll get real brave in one of the middle rounds, tire, then get eaten alive" thing that so many Golovkin opponents do, I'll be happy. I don't expect him to win but please, at least do something fresh and spirited.

I fully expect this to end in first 5

If he tries to hold, run, hug, clinch all night, he is in serious trouble.

He'll come at GGG fast and furious, playing into GGG hands. He'll then get hit and he'll think twice about coming wild again.

GGG often plays with his food when it's guys who can't hurt him.

I doubt he'll let Lemieux hit him.

Lemieux is trying to sell more PPVs... He has to do this...
... But, to be honest, the guy has his fair chance to catch Golovkin with a big punch...

The pre-fight talk reminds me of Groves-Froch - Groves did so much to publicize that fight but Froch shut him up in the ring.

I liked DL's story when the fight was announced, and he seems like a nice guy (single dad, comeback story, etc).. but now he's just getting on my nerves. Every day is another "is Golovkin ready for me?"

I also find it ironic that he thinks GGG's team is underestimating him while he himself keeps saying "I'm gonna surprise Golovkin" and "Golovkin is just a puncher, I can do so much more"... Dude, he's had over 300 amateur fights and is 7 years older than you. Whatever you're gonna bring, he HAS seen. DL is the one who's disrespecting his opponent.
