Comments Thread For: Argenis Mendez Ready: I Want a World Title Fight Next

Argenis Mendez promised the boxing world a more aggressive performance, which he believed would be key in offsetting the awkward style of Miguel Vazquez. It didn’t quite work out that way, although the fight still landed in Mendez’ favor in their lightweight battle Tuesday evening at Cowboys Dance Hall in San Antonio, Texas.

This guy wants a title shot after a bad performance .. He told the fans that he would come forward but all he did was try to counter

Well, to his credit though I don't know if he could have done much better because of how his opponent was fighting. He may have had in mind to go forward but then realized it was better to counter because of how the fight turned out to be. And don't get me wrong I have always felt that Mendez has the talent but is somewhat a little lazy with it...needs more hard work to go with it.

Vasquez has the kind of random, frustrating style that can make you look bad but I'm still not convinced Mendez will be able to win a world title, at least not at this point in his career. He wasn't able to make the right adjustments in the fight to win decisively and if he continues to have problems with awkward styles, he's going to run into more trouble like he did with Barthelemy. There's no use in trying to counter when you don't know where the punches are coming from. Mendez rarely found the proper range against Vasquez and could benefit from better footwork, taking a half step back when Vasquez rushes in with his head down and using more angles, lateral movement to keep Vasquez off balance.
