If this is in reference to Matthysse, he said he felt a pop in his eye. He could get up and risk losing his eye I suppose. Vitali could have fought on against Byrd and lost the rest of his career. Hopkins could have gotten up and risked his ankle against Dawson. Duran could have went on against Pat Lawlor although his shoulder was in bad shape. I'm mean, when your livelihood and overall health are at risk, it takes a man to keep on just to win one fight. Right?
Frazier would never quit. He was forced to. He also did not have a lengthy career. Mayweather never quit, but he never was in a situation where he had to, as many other fighters have been.
Pure boxers who use lots of movement are never going to get the respect of those who tend to exchange and fight. It just is not going to happen. The first time they leap across the ring to create distance, the respect meter goes down. It is the way it is and always has been.
On the color side, Frazier never leaped away from opponents. Neither did Louis or Johnson or Armstrong or Tyson or Foreman or Lyle or too many others to name.
Styles make fights and a boring style will never sell like an exciting style. In order to be a warrior, you have to be in a war. Matthysse did fight in a way in his last fight against Provodnikov- another warrior who has been in plenty of them. I never saw Mayweather in a war. He's too tactical. It's skillful but not exciting. Broner was in a war with Maidana, but Maidana made it into a war in the first round by showing him no respect and roughing him up. Maidana is another warrior who was in wars with Ortiz and Morales and Khan. Mayweather is a fine boxer, but he will not be considered a warrior. He never was in a war. If it was war, he would be a sniper- not a soldier on the battlefield. A sniper is not a coward, mind you. He just is not taking the same risks since he is farther away. The ring is always dangerous.
