In boxing, what is the difference between a "rugged" and "tough" boxer?

Floyd Mayweather said Marcos Maidana is a rugged boxer.

What exactly does that mean? As a boxing term, what is the definition of rugged?

    spelling......

tough is about absorbing punishment while rugged is about the way you apply your offense.

Tough is just how much punishment you can take- pauli, margarito, la motta,

Rugged is a physical grinding style- Porter, frazier, Barkley, peter

Margarito is a guy both rugged and tough

Orlando Salido is a rugged fighter; he's quite unorthodox, without much of a straight-up style but he's found ways to be effective with what he does.

Bernard Hopkins and Carl Froch, among others, are tough fighters; can get hit with whatever you want to try and hit them with, yet you won't ever see them buckle under the assault.

When I think of tough, I picture a fighter as tough as a cheap steak. He can take it and just keep throwing back, ala Timothy Bradley or Juan Manuel Marquez.

Rugged is more like a rough and tumble fighter who comes storming in and they are not boxers but brawlers typically. What they lack technically, they make up for by stepping in and shaking up their opponents. Maidana would be a rugged fighter.

Tough is about being able to take it and come back over and over while rugged would be more about style.

Rugged= the rough, crude and unsophisticated side of boxing: simplified to hurting your your opponent.

Tough= how much a fighter can endure.

I think all rugged fighters are tough, but not all tough fighters are rugged. I can't think of a fighter who was crude, effective, but didn't have toughness.

Rugged is having a tough mentality.

Tough is having a strong chin and body.
