Unless you follow either guys sport, then neither are well known IMO. I'd also say that McGregor is more popular over here. My opinion though, is that the McGregor bandwagon will de-rail soon..while Canelo has staying power.

In the USA Conor McGregor, in Europe Conor McGregor, in Mexico Canelo.

Conor speaks English and UFC really promotes him, he and Ronda Rousey are pushed heavily by the company they get them agents, commercials, talk shows, they do tons of press with different media and it built them into names.

Golden Boy doesn't do anything in terms of publicity and marketing for Canelo other than letting him do signings at a small casino or show promoted by golden boy.

Canelo also needs to speak English, Conor has been on so many big name talk shows, Canelo hasnt even been on fellow red head Conon o briens show yet. even Klitschko went on there.

Boxing does a poor job of marketing their stars in the social media era, they are living in the past where boxing stars were made through news paper and news media, now social media is the dominant presence and the internet.

I'd say that Canelo is by far the bigger star in the US based on the entire Latino/Hispanic community here knowing him. I mean, older Hispanic ladies and little kids know who this guy is here, that's pretty big. Nobody really knows who Conor McGregor is outside of people who watch combat sports. He has a great personality but he's not quite a household name yet. Ronda Rousey is the only household name that the UFC has currently.

Also, you don't have to be speak English to be a big star, look at Chavez Sr., Roberto Duran, and Tito Trinidad. You're underestimating the presence of the Latino population in the US. Furthermore, Canelo has done commercials for Under Armour so there's that as far as marketing.

If you are a boxing fan then Alvarez. If you are an MMA fan then Coner. If you go by who gets paid the most money for fighting each year then Canelo is the biggest star by a mile. Dana White is the only guy in MMA who makes really big money and he is the promoter. If you want to know who doesn't have mutilated ears it's Canelo.

Do you know how much money Coner was paid for that fight? Was he paid as much as Canelo will be paid for fighting Cotto? I think in those big MMA shows the promoter makes most of the money and not that much money goes to the fighters.

Of course the mma guys are ripped off especially the ones in the UFC doesn't change the fact that McGregor is more known in the U.S.
