Why do we have this silly weigh in system?

Why don't they weight in before stepping in the ring?

Or why don't they restrict rehydration limit to 3-4 pounds which could be a reasonable, normal and healthy fluctuation in weight of an athlete after training, drinking, eating?

I know that nothing really changes because all pro athletes do the same so they are fighting equal, but is the whole concept that is somehow idiotic. Wouldn't be better if the real categories were respected?
The current weight in system was introduced in the 80s if I'm not mistaken because dehydration was noted as a major cause of brain injury during fights.

I like that weigh ins happen 24 hours before, a fighter, like any athlete, should be given time to rehydrate. But I'm with you, there needs to be a limit to the rehydration, what's the point of weight divisions then?

I've always believed in a 5lb maximum weight increase from weigh in to fight time. Anything more, charge the guy 50% of his fight fee. That should quickly put a stop to any cheating.
