The Case for Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez"

A lot of complaining going on about a 112 pounder being crowned the best fighter in the world pound for pound. Based on what's going on, no other fighter is more deserving right now than Roman Gonzalez. When configuring these rankings, you have to consider:

    1. Who did they beat and at what point in their careers?
    2. How did they beat them?
    3. The fighters skills and upside potential

With Roman Gonzalez, you have a 3 division world champion at the age of 28. His resume consists of:

    Mini
    1. Yutaka Nilda (the #1 ranked mini weight)
    2. Katsunari Takayama (ranked #6 mini weight at the time, currently ranked #2)

    Light fly

    1. Juan Francisco Estrada - arguably a top 10 p4p fighter right now in his own right
    2. Francisco Rodriguez Jr. - Current top 10 LFW

    Fly

    1. Akira Yaegashi - Lineal flyweight champion at the time
    2. Edgar Sosa - perennial top 10 contender

Now let's get into how he's rank through his opposition. He is 43-0 with 37 KOs (86% KO). He is a complete fighter: power in both hands, solid body puncher, ability to apply pressure and cut off the ring, skilled counter puncher, good timing, smart, sets traps and sets up his attack extremely well.

No other fighter has beaten the #1 guy in 3 different weight divisions and in some cases they haven't even cleaned up 1. While Ward, GGG and Kovalev sort out their issues, the pound for pound #1 spot deserving should belong to Chocolatito.

i feel like povetkin, pulev, jennings and fury is a better run of form than yaegashi, fuentes, sosa and viloria. i'd like roman to stop faffing about and give estrada the rematch already (not to mention ruenroeng). apart from yaegashi, you can't really say that roman has fought the most dangerous guy available to him lately, whereas you could say that of wlad with regards to povetkin, pulev and fury. on the other hand, i'd much rather watch a gonzalez fight than a klitschko fight...

The Povetkin fight was a win but that was a disgusting performance. Pulev and Jennings were impressive and I give him full credit for it. I can't sit here and argue resume against a champion that has reigned for about a decade but I can say Gonzalez has simply looked like the better fighter as he has gone up in weight and continued to dominate.

It's a hard sell. Hardly any boxing fans follow the lower weights.

Rankings are easy to follow though and when you look at this guy's accomplishments he's beaten the top fighters in multiple divisions.
