Ive read so many posts, tweets and articles over the years regarding FM and they all have the same theme: You either love him wholeheartedly or hate his existence and wish for nothing more than for him to get beat down by any means possible.
Try it yourself, attempt to play it middle of the road and offer floyd mild praise/criticism and the conversation gets pushed one way or the other. You couldn't possibly negatively critique his berto performance otherwise your a hater? or you cannot praise his years of dominance without him being a "cherry picker". As a FM fan myself I try so hard to stay centered when discussing him on twitter etc. What baffles me is the sheer commitment to his cause or the hatred towards him.
Lets take his fight against Andre Berto, the truth is that FM is levels and levels above AB. There is no justifiable excuse for FM not going harder for the stoppage. He didn't up his game at all and what we saw was a typically safe, defensive masterclass from FM. That fight didn't need that. It screamed out for him to step his game up. I tried to explain this to a guy on twitter and he might as well have told me he wanted to give FM a *******. He even tried defending AB as if he deserved some sort of warrior status. I have no issue with this guy having his own opinions, its the sheer groupie mentality. If as fans we don't give these fighters enough pressure to perform or pick better opponents then we lose out. Hence having to watch a boxing great bow out against andre 'shoulder roll' Berto.
Of course you are allowed your favorites etc but we need to keep it objective. Otherwise we risk losing out as fans. You only need to look at Matchrooms (UK Promoter) model to see how loving the awful shows they produce breeds more awful shows. Educated pressure on fighters to perform and pick better opposition will work as long as its constructive. Leaning towards 100% hate or love for a fighter leaves there position open for abuse. As much as I like FM, last night made me realize he did just that with his choice of opposition. The result? more mismatches to follow. I mean if you could write a $70million cheque with little pressure of opponent choice you would. Again this is a result of 100% blind commitment to a fighter.
We should never stop having the conversations about boxing,we just need to tweak the way we articulate them. Promoters/fighters are not ****** and feed off it. FM has proven it and made himself ****** rich as a result. Want change? accept nothing less than what fans deserve or continue to get the likes of FM vs AB. Don't pour hatred on the idea that we want better otherwise your feeding the problem.
