    How Great Was Wilfred Benitez

I been seing some of his fights on you tube and this guy was something else. He was up and down at times but he was special. He was neck and neck with ray leonard in their fight winnig 6 rounds on my card and making leonard look silly at times. Beat Duran, Cervantes, Palomino, made Hearns look silky in a close decision. He was a defensive wizard.

Why is this guy not talked about more? Watching him fight he looks like a generational talent.

They didn't call him radar for nothing. He's one of my personal favorites. I've read somewhere he only trained like 3 weeks for a fight which is unheard of in today's standards of fighting.

On top of not speaking English,he wasn't a wild man like Duran in his fighting. But winning a world title at 17 was outrageous.

Because he didn't win those big fights against Leonard and hearns. He also had a defensive style in an era that offered so much action, his style and inability to stay consistent beating top fighters. Made him fade off he retired pretty young to I believe his body was spent because he didn't train properly and once his reflexes slowed that was it. I'm not sure if all that's accurate but **** it's gotta be that's like the story for 9/10 fighters.

The Four Kings refers to Duran, Leonard, Hagler and Hearns. They have been collectively given this title because each one fought the other 3. Specifically...

Hagler fought Leonard, Hearns, and Duran

Duran fought Leonard, Hearns, and Hagler

Hearns fought leonard, Duran, and Hagler

Leonard fought Duran, Hearns, and Hagler

Benitez only fought Duran, Hearns, and Leonard. He never moved up to middleweight to fight Hagler. Had he done so it would have been the Five Kings.

Unfortunate, really. And the primary reason he is not mentioned with the above fighters despite soundly beating one, barely losing to the other one, and fighting a technical classic chess match with the third one.

pretty great. i always wonder why they didn't call it the 5 horsemen. sugar and hears with hagler, duran AND benitez. he didn't have the longevity but he has a quality win and two great contests against anyone not being a bald fak in hagler.

Actually Back in the era that Leonard, Hearns, Benitez and Duran were battling for welterweight titles they were called the "Fab Four". Later the battles featured Hagler at middleweight and now people put Hagler as one of the four. But the term Fab Four was coined referring to Leonard, Hearns, Benitez and Duran.
