Comments Thread For: Gamboa Says Juanma's Downfall Was Soft Matchmaking

A few years ago, one of the biggest fights to be made in boxing was a featherweight unification between Olympic gold medal winner Yuriokis Gamboa (24-1, 17KOs) of Cuba and rising Puerto Rican star Juan Manuel Lopez (34-5, 31KOs).

At the time, Top Rank was the promoter of record for both fighters. They started building the matchup when both boxers were champions at super bantamweight and eventually they both moved up to become champions at 126-pounds.

Yes, this was the fight for which Arum actually came up with the phrase "let it marinate."

Hindsight is 20/20 but Salido wasn't anything special and hadn't beaten anyone of worth. He had just been dominated by Gamboa and had 8 losses. Juanma could have just outboxed Salido but decided to go to war.

Gamboa needs to get back in the ring fast. Fun to watch and not sure how long he can fight at the top of his game. One of the most exciting fighters in the sport.
