Comments Thread For: Warren Reflects on Frank Bruno Stunning McCall For Belt

It was exactly 20 years ago this week that the nation was celebrating one of the most popular victories in the history of British boxing.

September 2nd 1995 was the night Frank Bruno finally became the WBC world heavyweight champion, defeating the flaky American Oliver McCall on my promotion at Wembley Stadium.

Dear old Frank was by then firmly established as Britain’s fighting son, despite falling short in three previous world title shots and giving us palpitations whenever he got hit on the whiskers.

After losses to Tim Witherspoon, Tyson & Lewis he ended up having a career night. I felt he was actually ahead in the Lewis fight until he got caught shoe shining when he backed Lewis into the corner. He was not an inside fighter & he had a bad habit of shoe shining guys when he had them against the ropes or in the corner. Lewis exploded with a big left hook in the 7th round I believe & that was the end of it. By the end of his career I thought Bruno got too muscular & it slowed him down.

I watched it live. It was a great moment for perseverance and Bruno may never been the best but it was a great moment in boxing.
