Comments Thread For: Hopkins Has No Issue With Cotto-Canelo Catch-Weight

New York - Bernard Hopkins (55-7-2, 32 KO’s) had a historic middleweight run, included a record 20 defenses from 1994 to 2005. In that run he was the lineal champion of the division in 2001 and was undisputed in 2004. Still an active fighter, Hopkins was in New York promoting the bout between Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KO’s) and Canelo Alvarez (45-1-1, 32 KO’s) which will have the lineal title on the line that stems back from Cotto beating Sergio Martinez - who beat Kelly Pavlik - who beat Jermain Taylor - who beat Bernard Hopkins.

ya catch weight has kinda turned into something everyone hates no matter what now. ever since mayweather fought canelo at 152 people completely hate every single catch weight no matter if it makes sense or not. lets be real not all catch weights are bad and honestly i hate to say it but a 157 or so catch weight for cotto ggg makes total sense whether or not its for the title

You are delusional, it's more like ever since Mayweather fought at a catchweight now you guys can't stop defending them. The amount of catchweights in boxing is reaching a ridiculous level, almost every fight in PBC is a catchweight, the goddamn 160 lineal title is being fought at a catchweight, and it seems like if Cotto vs Golovkin were to come to fruition it would also be at a catchweight. And then we have idiots like you who have no problem with it. Cotto vs Canelo catchweight is not that bad because that's usually where Canelo fights, but GGG shouldn't have to drain himself to fight for a belt that he deserves.

Cotto had to drain himself to fight pacquiao even though he was the champion. Canelo had to agree with a catchweight to fight Floyd. Whether you GGG-tards like it or not GGG will have to agree to a catchweight if he wants a Cotto/Canelo fight. That's the business of boxing.

I didn't like any of those either, and I didn't like it when GGG said that Ward should meet him at a catchweight either, but I bet you have a problem with that one when going by your logic that should be ok.

Catchweights existed long ago in boxing. They created the newer divisions to allow guys to meet half way as a catchweight. WHERE THEY ****ED UP WAS THESE GREEDY BODY SANCTIONS GIVING THOSE WEIGHT CLASSES WORLD TITLES. now guys can win titles in it and STILL do catchweights for those belts.

The problem with the GGG vs Ward CW is that K2 offered it in terms of monetary compensation, not a size discrepancy which 99% of CW are used for and didn't ask for a CW for froch or Chavez whom are bigger in size compared to Ward , and they said they were the A-side. If cotto vs Canelo winner suddenly says to GGG well offer you 155lb CW for 50:50 money it'll start a riot not for you, but for those who really tried to justify the GGG Ward CW.

I can't be bothered to look that up, but at catchweight is a catchweight. I still maintain that the lineal middleweight championship shouldn't be fought at a catchweight, it's getting ridiculous, Cotto hasn't fought once at middleweight in his whole career and yet he has the lineal title. Hopefully if Canelo wins he has the balls to fight GGG without a catchweight.

Still I digress, those fights haven't been negotiated yet, hell maybe the winner drops the belt, I suppose my problem is the casual attitude around here regarding catchweights. It degrades the sport, and reduces the wins of those who take advantage of them.
