Comments Thread For: Mares Vows 'Fight of The Year' Battle With Santa Cruz

By Jake Donovan - At the very moment he outpointed Joseph Agbeko in their first fight in Aug. ’11, Abner Mares became the first-ever home-grown fighter for Golden Boy Promotions to capture a major title. He remains the only fighter from the 2004 Mexico Olympic boxing team—which also includes super welterweight slugger Alfredo Angulo—to have done so, never mind in three weight classes.

Mares has never taken issue with heavy lifting. Yet, there remains concern about he performs in a must-win situation ahead of his anticipated August 29 showdown with undefeated Leo Santa Cruz.

The bout headlines at Staples Center in Los Angeles, with Santa Cruz fighting as a full-fledged featherweight for the first time in his career. Mares has been at the weight since 2013, dating back to his knockout win over Daniel Ponce de Leon to capture his third title in as many weight divisions.

However, it was the follow-up performance—and his lone loss to date—that has boxing experts still expressing concern about his ability to perform at the top level. A stunning 1st round knockout at the hands of Jhonny Gonzalez in Aug. ’13 registered as the Upset of the Year, and perhaps the turning point in Mares’ once brilliant career. [Click Here To Read More]

Love the fight and think the odds makers have it wrong. I'm taking Mares cause of his more accurate punching and I just don't think Santa Cruz cracks hard enough to seriously throw Mares off of his game. Anybody know who's reffing? The ref could play a roll in this fight.

he's way smaller than santa snooze and will lose a UD.

Mares is'nt heavy handed. He is more of a guy that gets you out of there from an accumilation of punches. I got Mares by late stoppage because he has an absolutely vicious body attack, he is the more skilled fighter, has better defense, and more expirience against top opponents. LSC is too easy to hit and does'nt have enough power to keep Mares honest imo.

Either way though, it is a great fight and should be a war.

                Santa Snooze...hilarious

Rooting for Mares, but this a case of a guy who moved too fast and took on every possible challenge (he wanted Donaire prior to Rigo bad), and a guy who has been hiding at a lower class waiting for the right moment to strike. He has it now.

Al Haymon's Mexican son by UD. He is just fresher and bigger, if not actually better.

I wanna think Mares will surprise, but that Gonzales KO took a lot of the fight out of him. In fact, this is his first step up since that KO. He had 3 tuneup I believe.

2 over hyped fighters. Mares seems soft and LSC fights construction works and cab drivers. Both lack KO power. Could be boring fight.
