  • Comments Thread For: Beterbiev's Promoter Explains Move To Pass on Kovalev

If fans were hoping to see a light heavyweight explosion between unbeaten contender Artur Beterbiev (9-0, 9KOs) and WBO/WBA/IBF champion Sergey Kovalev (28-0-1, 25KOs) - they may have to wait a little longer because it won't happen on November 28th.

A few weeks ago, Kovalev's promoter Kathy Duva of Main Events informed BoxingScene that her fighter will return on the previously mentioned November date in Moscow, Russia.

Exactly,I'm not buying this whole "I need one more fight before kovalev" thing, because one fight would make no difference, especially when it comes to facing someone like kovalev. I'm willing to put money on the fact that Hopkins will say no to fighting atur (he's 50 and deserves to pass on the fight) and they'll just fight some other guy in order to be kovalevs mando. Once Artur is in place, they'll play hardball, demand ridiculous things, all in order to force a purse bid,and try to get kovalev to either break his hbo contract,or vacate the title.

if they do, so what? Duva tried to do the same thing when she asked to be the mando-she thought it would force Stevenson to vacate the title.

If the situation plays itself out like you posted duva/kov have no one to blame but themselves.

Purse bids are historically how fights that can't get a deal made get finalized. you should have no issue with this.

I totally understand that his team don't want him to fight Kovalev after Ramadam. It would be hard for him since his body won't be fully recovered. I'm even pretty sure Duva knew about it and then asked him for this fight. That is so obvious : Fighting Beterbiev after Ramadam would be the only chance Sergei have to beat him! Period. So now that IBF ordered a fight between Beterbiev and Hopkins, we only have to wait until his opponent to be revealed, since we all know Hopkins won't accept the fight. Pretty sure it will be Chilemba. Would have like to see Beterbiev-Fonfara tough. What about Kovalev fight in Russia ? Kovalev-Pascal 2. There you go!

What is so wrong with a purse bid.thay is probably the best thing about boxing only way some fights can get made

I see what you mean, but let me put it like this. It's one thing to try and force a purse bid,in order to make sure that you don't get screwed over in the negotiations, and you get your fair share of the pie. It's another thing to know that your side has a ton of investor money which they can just throw at the purse bid,and you intentionally blueball the negotiations,so you can force a purse bid and make the champion break his contract,or vacate his title. If they can negotiate a deal without a purse bid, then hells yeah, let them fight. If arturs team intentionally screws with negotiations in order to force a purse bid that will **** kovalev over, then screw those guys.

                    Yeah.

The purse bid helps Beterbiev/Michel more if the fight doesn't happen...because Beterbiev's the challenger, and 25% ain't that much, even if it's a PBC bid.
