Comments Thread For: Malignaggi Doesn’t Want Career To End On The Canvas

His family and friends were adamantly against it, but Paulie Malignaggi made the difficult decision to return to the ring in large part because he didn’t want his fourth-round knockout loss to Shawn Porter to be the final fight of his career.

Malignaggi’s motivation for fending off retirement was among the things the 34-year-old boxer/broadcaster revealed in an essay he wrote for The Players’ Tribune, the Derek Jeter-owned website that published it Friday. Malignaggi (33-6, 7 KOs), a former junior welterweight and welterweight champion from Brooklyn, will fight for the first time Saturday night since Porter knocked him out 15 months ago in a 12-round main event against Philadelphia’s Danny Garcia (30-0, 17 KOs) at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center (ESPN; 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT).

Taking a tough fight after 16 months out with no tune-up after getting destroyed by Porter doesn't exactly help his chances.

I had always felt Malignaggi had the style to give Garcia issues, but he hasn't given himself the best possible run-in to the bout.

Perhaps it won't matter either way, we'll see I guess.

Still can't get over the fact that after getting his butt knocked out and was in semi retirement he hires Memo the dirtiest man in all sports. A known PED supplier, cheater and liar to help "train" him. After years of accusing other fighters of PEDs and screaming about cleaning up the sport you hire a known cheater who is banned from every other major sport?

Paulie is a loud mouth fraud and hypocrite. Juicing for the Garcia fight. No respect for this clown

Paulie may have won two belts but he never was the champ. Those belts make nice trophies and have afforded him financial success that has allowed him to have a second career as an commentator. He will end up looking up as the the ref waives off the fight..Paulie definitely overachieved With help from the promoter, manager, matchmaker and most importantly ,believing in himself.

Unfortunately for Paulie this ain't gonna go down the way he hopes it would.. I know Garcia is overrated and arguably lost twice already but there's nothing Paulie can do to hurt Danny..

Well then all he has to do is run the entire fight. Just fight like Mayweather

Ironically, if Pauli and Mora were close enough in weight, he'd have better luck vs the Snake. But I'd be shocked if he gets past Garcia. Looking forward though to Garcia's next fights at WW. But Pauli? Yesterday's news story at best, and even then, it's on page 28D.
