Fernando Montiel vs. Jhonny Gonzalez

Who are you picking in this upcoming title fight between 2 very good little guys?

I gotta go with Jhonny Gonzalez here. He's been fighting at bantamweight his whole career and has a clear cut advantage in natural size and power. I believe he is 4 inches taller than Montiel and he has an explosive right hand.

Montiel is probably the better boxer though. He had a lot of trouble with Mark Johnson (when 2 sharp showed why he should be in the HOF) but it was a great performance by Johnson anyway. I think he's capable of dropping and/or hurting Gonzalez, but I think he'll have problems getting in punching range.

Should Montiel win I wouldn't be surprised, but it will probably be a FOTY type of fight regardless. Comments...

Fernando Montiel is one of my most hated fighters and I have watched Johnny Gonzalez grow up a bit on HBO Latino so I will be pulling for Johnny for sure.

This is an unbelievable tough fight to call, I would have to say Montiel by split decision because I can envision Johnny getting himself into a points hole in the first half of the fight.

Could be real interesting because I think both guys dont take a clean shot all too well.

Mark Johnson was a shell of his former self when he faced Gonzalez. Not to take away from Jhonny's win because even then Johnson was a good test....but a prime 2 sharp beats Gonzalez comfortably. He was shop worn and was just coming off a bad knockout loss to (i forget who the fighter is now...?)

Anyway, I think this is a pretty even matchup with the size/power edge to Gonzalez and the natural skill edge to Montiel.

Does nobody respond to this stuff (thanks to those who did) because they don't know much about these guys or don't pay attention to lower weights? This is one of the better matchups this year in my opinion.

I have a feeling that Gonzalez will get started a bit earlier than he usually does.

Montiel has what it takes to beat Gonzales. As long as he keeps moving and boxing he's good.
