Comments Thread For: Reyes: I Was Against All Odds - Weight, Ref, Everything!

EL PASO, TEXAS – Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. earned a unanimous decision (97-92, 98-91, 96-93) over Marcos Reyes in the main event of SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on Saturday in front of 9,245 at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas.

Reyes was the more active fighter – he doubled Chavez’s output – but simply couldn’t hurt his larger opponent. Following a loss at light heavyweight last April, Chavez decided to attempt to campaign at super middleweight.

Chavez won but it was close, despite his gargantuan size advantage. Chavez looked sloppy as hell.

Hopefully Reyes will find another opponent and come back from this setback.

Reyes himself admitted that he did not think Chavez would make weight. Therefore, he took the fight knowing that would most likely happen in advance. He was also compensated for the extra weight by Chavez. Additionally, he did not have to fight.

Therefore, him crying about it is not a good reflection of his character. The point deduction was ridiculous, but it not affect the outcome of the fight. The 96-93 score was accurate in my opinion. I think Reyes won 3 or maybe 4 rounds at most. The other judge' scorecards were out-of-line, but then again the scoring in the previous fight was atrocious and Aerrola was gifted a draw too - so it being in Texas this was expected.

Chavez needs to spend 2-3 years and several fights fighting at the c class level, he needs to be built up as a prospect. The guy hasn't done anything since his somewhat impressive middleweight run and then took a beating at the hands of Martinez and hasn't recovered since.
