  • Comments Thread For: Gary Russell Jr. on Mares vs. Santa Cruz, Lomachenko II

Tampa, Florida - Gary Russell, Jr. (26-1, 15 KO’s) wants to defend his world title that he won over Jhnonny Gonzalez in the coming months. The future seems to be bright with the amount of fighters that Russell's adviser, Al Haymon has been signing from 122 to 130-pounds. For now Russell Jr. is patiently waiting for his next fight.

Both Mares and Santa Cruz's best weight(s) were at 122lbs and in no way have either of their last few opponents (or any opponent really) throughout their careers have prepared them for someone like Gary Russell Jr. Mares beating Santa Cruz or vice versa does not equate to a title shot or does it make them ready for Russell. I dont think Russell is some gift to boxing but he is the type of fighter you have to prepare for. Of the 2 Mares at the top of his career (after the PDL win) had the best chance to beat Russell but at this point sadly he could get stopped & Santa Cruz has no business at 126 when his quality of opposition hasn't been up to par at that weight, unless par = Tijuana bacon wrapped hot dog vendor. With that said, at one point Mares vs. Santa Cruz was a fantastic fight, now I think its a HBO Latino level fight especially knowing that Russell Jr. is waiting in the wing & Im not really interested anymore.

If GRJ fought Lomachenko again, he gets knocked out in 5. The fight will NEVER happen now that it's not for a vacant title, Al Haymon will not allow any of his fighters to fight a non-Haymon fighter who isn't being brought in as a showcase fight for his fighters/a half-time boxer-full-time single father.

GRJ vs. LSC/Mares would be okay, but do they really have any choice? That fight has to happen next or they will continue to lose crediblity by matching fighters against UFC fighters

I have seen much improvement in Lomachenko to suggest he would KO GRJr in 5 but if you say so.

A fight with the winner of Mares/Santa Cruz would be great... The same goes for a rematch with Lomachenko.

Lomachenko is improving with every fight now, he has only 5 fights not 25 like Gary.It means when loma has about 10-15 fights the fight between them will be more onesided than it was

rematches should be for close fights or contraversal fights. Lomachenko dominated and exposed Russell. A second fight is pointless and the results will be the same or worse for Russell. Stay fighting the bums Haymon hand picks for you

Please Explain how Lomo has improved to such a degree he will end the fight by KO within 5... I don't see it but please Explain. Was is KOing a nobody in 9, or going 12 with a Thai can driver... Again I'll wait?!

Russell's fast and has skills but he looses to Lomachenko 10 times out of 10. Move on boy.

I think both Santa Cruz and Mares are custom-made for GRJ. Either one of them would make him look very good. Straight ahead guys with not a lot of power, I think he dominates either one.

But I don't think GRJ can be competitive with Loma either. I don't know if he stops him, because he hit him with everything in the first fight and he was still standing at the end - maybe he could stop him on his stool, but Loma beats him again with no problem in my opinion.
