  • Oleksandr Usyk will fight another journeyman: Johnny Muller

Some people say Oleksandr Usyk is just as good as Vasyl Lomachenko and most say he's better than Artur Beterbiev, so why is he fighting clubfighters?

I think he should be fighting meaningful opponents, decent fringe contenders and former beltholders, the kind of opponent we've seen in with Beterbiev (cruiserweight versions of Campillo and Cloud).

His August 22 opponent will be Johnny Muller (19-4-2).

I wouldn't say he's a journeyman, not the greatest of opponents though. They are probably fighting him because he just beat Mateusz Masternak, who was ranked #4 in the WBO (the belt Usyk is aiming at first). I'm confident in Usyk's ability. Yeah, there is people saying he's better than Lomachenko and Beterbiev and only time will tell. He did go 2-1 against Beterbiev, but it could have easily been 1-2 (personally I thought Artur beat him at the Olympics, but just barely it was a really close fight). Artur did very well against him, even though Usyk was obviously bigger. I think highly of Usyk and I will even favor him against the probable #1 at Cruiser, Marco Huck.

I'm more excited for the debut of Denys Berinchyk, I always thought he had a style built for professional boxing and for a second I didn't think he'll turn pro. I do have some worries on how his style will do in professional boxing, even though his style screams professional. But there are questions I need answering. Hopefully, they move him at a good pace, not slow like Top Rank is doing their Euro fighter (other than Loma), but at the same time without rushing; just see how he does fight by fight and see how fast he could move. If he turns pro at Lightweight, I think he can be champion in like a year. You know, unless he's for some reason not made for the pros for whatever reason.

Yes, Top Rank ruined Korobov, and now they are doing the same to Mekhontsev and the very talented Gvozdyk.

And they ruined the Canadian Zewski, who looked great a couple of years ago but they held him back until he lost his focus and began to decline.

Yes, I think he is as talented as Lomachenko, I think he actually looked better then Vasyl in WSB against better opponents including 2-time World Champion Medzhidov. The reason why K2 takes him relatively slowly to the top (though Danny Venter in 6th pro fight was good opponent) is money. Usyk is huge star in Ukraine already, and K2 makes a lot of money (by Ukrainian standards) on his fights and to maximize profit they take cheaper opponents. Usyk is ready for the top fighters - he was killing Afolabi in sparrings with his speed and movement. His opposition now isn't bad, but for a talent like him I'd like to see better opponents too.

I disagree on Berinchyk. I'm fan of his exciting style, but I think his skill level is few levels below his Olympian teammates Usyk, Lomachenko, Gvozdyk and Khytrov. He also showed seriuos stamina issues in WSB, which isn't a good sign for a pro fighter. He might be much more exciting fighter than Lomachenko or Usyk, but I highly doubt he will ever win a world title, though I hope I'm wrong.

As for Usyk's fights with Beterbiev, I think Usyk deserved the win at the Olympics, but margin should be smaller than 17:13. At the same time, I think he beat Artur by much bigger margin than 17:13 in the World Championship in Baku. I'm fan of both Usyk and Artur and hope they both wins world titles soon. I also think Artur made a mistake trying to compete at the HW in the Olympics, he should have stayed in the LHW division and he would be Olympic champion in that case. I mean he beat Mekhontsev a couple of times in the Russian internal tournaments and I don't know why he decided to go up in the weight class.

He might not be as good as his teammates, but we still don't know for sure (he could surprise us). I'm just excited to see how he does in the pros, because he had a style that screamed professional boxer. I also said there is some questions that need answering and the stamina issue is one. If he starts at Lightweight he'll definitely be champion (Lightweight is such a weak division). Don't give up on him so easily, when we haven't seen his professional debut. The stamina issue can be solved, hopefully, with a strength and conditioning coach. His style relies a lot on energy and his engine. He's a relentless fighter, which obviously uses a lot of energy. There is ways he can improve don't give up just yet.

That's why I said that the fight was close and I thought Artur barely edged it. It was mainly because I thought Artur was relentless in that fight and I thought he landed more punches. I just don't like that he had to fight Usyk so early in the tournament. He got robbed at the 08 Olympics and got a bad draw at the 2012 Olympics. Artur is Olympic medal caliber type fighter, but he had bad luck.
Do you have info as to why they decided to switch Artur to Heavy and Egor to Light-Heavy, I was under the impression that it wasn't Artur's choice. Seems kind of unfair since Artur was doing great at Light-Heavy and would have probably won the Gold, if Egor did it I don't see why Artur couldn't do it. Egor was doing well at Heavy, it just doesn't make sense to me at all. They could have gotten two medals instead of one, since they both would have most likely been seeded in their respective weight class.

?? I know it was controversial, but he officially has a victory. It doesn't make sense, what I typed shouldn't be anything to make someone butthurt, so chill. I'm just stating facts, whether you agree or disagree with the decision.
