Comments Thread For: Keith Thurman Visits Shriners Hospital in Tampa

TAMPA, FL - Keith Thurman, the unbeaten Welterweight World Champion, had an inspirational boxing meeting of the give-back kind on Thursday, July 2 at Shriners Hospitals for Children-Tampa. Thurman and his team visited the hospital in advance of his July 11 title fight on “Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN” series live from Tampa.

Thurman, Leon Margules, President, Warriors Boxing & Promotions, and Dan Birmingham, Head Coach, Team Thurman, spent over three hours with the brave children and staff at Shriners, hearing their stories and victories, as well as sharing stories on his boxing career.

People here will likely trash the move, but actions like this are how you establish stars. The national TV will definitely introduce your name/face to the country/world at large, but doing activities like this in the local area helps the home region identify and rally behind their fighter (no doubt that the footage will hopefully end up being picked up by the local press).

Thurman in the Tampa region, Danny Garcia in Philly/NYC, Wilder in Alabama, Szpilka/Fonfora in Chicago, Terrence Crawford in Omaha (kinda different situation), Andre Ward in the Bay Area, etc.

The boxing business model is changing, in a "back to the future" type sense (kind of how the music business changed, if you can imagine); with the PPV business fading into the distance (no doubt that Golden Boy will continue to try and push Canelo on PPV, with Kovalev and Golovkin pushed down those paths out of a lack of foresight), boxing is heading into an era where drawing eyeballs (for ad revenue) and selling tickets will drive the business.

As cheesy as this might seem I'm even bigger fan of Thurman after this. If an article like this lifted my spirits I can only imagine how those kids and Thurman feel. Good ish One Time

MAJOR props to Keith. I wish more athletes were as giving with their time.

Those kids in my book are the real true fighter's.

I think Thurman has this rough exterior but a soft heart......really good guy.

                  Another reason to like Thurman.
