Former champion and thriving boxing manager Barry McGuigan is calling for a ban on catch-weight fights. In recent years, catch-weights have really built up steam. This year alone, several key fights were based around catch-weights. Even the upcoming fall showdown between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Miguel Cotto will take place at a catch-weight of 155-pounds, which is one above the junior middleweight limit of 154.

McGuigan feels catch-weights are usually in favor of the lighter fighter and crosses the line in providing one fighter with a significant advantage in the contest.

I don't see a problem with catchweights overall, just as long as they aren't fought for titles.

I agree. Catchweights halfway between 2 divisions, when 2 top fighters are going to meet is fine.

When you have 2 guys in the same division fighting eachother and a catchweight is called..that's just silly.
Same deal when someone wants to challenge the other guys title. Fight at his weight or no title fight.

Cotto - Alvarez at a catchweight is NOT cool. It is for the LINEAL MIDDLEWEIGHT TITLE and the fighters should be free to come in at any weight up to the 160 limit. They want to come in lower, no problem. But there should be nothing forcing that to happen. Can't defend your title against someone who weighs the maximum in your own division then it is time to vacate the title and drop back down. You do not belong there.
