  • Dream Fight: Sugar Ray Robinson Vs Roy Jones Jr.

Possibly the greatest fight that could never be made but in only the dreams of boxing fans. Sugar Ray Robinson and Roy Jones Jr in the Primes could be said to be the 2 most physically gifted boxers in the long history of the sport. Two that took the sport by storm and did so winning themselves fighters of the decade. Robinson in the 40's and 50's, while Jones Jr was named the 90's fighter of the decade.

Robinson went 40 fights before seeing defeat to his great rival Jake LaMotta. He later went on to win 91 fights before another defeat, in the 91 winning streak he went on to win the Welterweight title defending the title 5 times and later winning the Middlewight title. Later losing the Middleweight Title, Robinson went on the become the first boxer to win a divisional title 5 times (middleweight).

Roy Jones Jr went on a 34 fight win streak before losing by DQ, which he immediately came back and won by 1st round KO. Jones is the best boxer in over 100 years to win a Middlewight title (160lbs) and move to win a Heavyweight Title (200+lbs). Jones won titles in four different weight classes; Middleweight (IBF) defending the title once, Super Middleweight (IBF) defending his title 5 times, Light Heavyweight (WBC/WBA/IBF/TheRing) unifying and defending the titles 12 times, and finally winning the Heavyweight Title (WBA).

Unfourtantly it will never be known who would have won such a fight between a man known as "Sugar" and another known by "Superman". At least we can argue!!! Prime Vs Prime; Middleweight Matchup.

Break down what I think would occur... Although Robinson was a monster, Jones would be the only one who could match his speed and power. In fact I believe Jones would have the advantage in power. As most fights Jones would start slow, using his awkward lunging in with hooks, as well as leading with them. Robinson would try to dictate the fight with his Jab but Jones often does well avoiding the jab.

This fight would go quite slow in the beginning but Robinson will start to attack but leaves himself open to Jones Counter attacks. Robinson has one hell of a chin though, and can attack right back with fast powerful strikes. Jones has the speed and power though to knock Robinson down but not out.

In a 15 round fight I believe Robinson will come on strong the later rounds and wins a SD. In a 12 round fight Jones wins by UD scoring a late knockdown giving him a slight edge on score cards.

Golovkin and Kovalev would smash both of them

robinson's a better fighter, but roy is much, much larger.

for most of his prime, robinson was a same day welterweight. he'd often come in below that limit. that means he was 150ish in the ring.

roy would have 20 lbs on him, and win the decision.

What the hell was Smoger doing

Did the same thing in the Tapia Kirkland fight, not being strong enough when he stops the fight and lets the fighter take too many shots.

I think RJJ is just too big for Robinson, coupled with his ridiculous athleticism too. P4P I think Robinson has the skills to time him and knock him out. Roy head to head is a great fighter though, even if his resume doesnt put him on the top top tier.

Nobody beats Roy in his prime. Not even Ray Robinson.

No trolling.. Trying for real discussion... Not individuals who have no clue what they are talking about.

Kovalev vs Roy Jones before the climb up to Heavyweight would finish Kovalev within 6. Jones would have had a huge speed advantage and probably equaled in power but Jones IQ would be what Kovalev would have issues with along side his awkward style.

Kovalev couldn't even smash a 49-year old Bernard Hopkins; you put either in with a prime Roy Jones Jr and they both get smoked within 6

I voted Jones by decision. He was a much better middleweight. Robinson was a welterweight and hard to beat at that weight but he did have a couple of draws and split decisions. All of Jones' middleweight fights were either KO wins for him or one sided points wins. Robinson was badly beaten by Tiger Jones at middleweight and Roy Jones was much better than Tiger Jones.
