Because the US olympic team wasn't flush with talent and if Ward fought at 165 Dirrell wouldn't have gone to the Olympics.

Golovkin fights at a lower weight than his younger days too.

If Dirrell had not gone, he would have finished his amateur career with a win over GGG and no loss. Ward would have replaced him and GGG would have a win over Ward and Ward would not have his Gold Medal. Imagine how that would have changed today's discussions!
