He looked good, but he suffered a trip knockdown which should have been called a trip. Valdez is really good.

Out of all the olympians from 2012 in pro boxing, he is the 4th best. This would probably be a list of cubans if any of them made it to the Pros.

      1. Vasyl Lomachenko
      2. Errol Spence
      3. Anthony Joshua
      4. Oscar Valdez
      5. Raushee Warren. The first US olympian from 2012 to fight for a world title
      6. Felix Verdejo

Oleksandr Usyk, Artur Beterbiev, Oleksandr Gvozdyk, Egor Mekhontsev, Ievgen Khytrov, Ryota Murata, Egidijus Kavaliauskas, Luke Campbell, Jose Ramirez are better than most on that list.
LOL I'm just messing with you, brother. Different Opinions. But it will be interesting to see which of these 2012 Olympians have the best careers. The 2012 Class was crazy talented overall.

As for Valdez he looked good, but just like every other prospect he has a lot to learn.
He seems to try to do more than he needs to; if that makes any sense. IMO he does unnecessary movements, he was trying out the Loma trick to create angles which worked sometimes but other times it didn't (at least he's trying out new things). But he does seem to be stylistically confused, he keeps switching things. That could be a good thing though, it's better to try out things then not to try (especially right now that he's barely starting).
I believe he had trouble with Tamayo's height and southpaw stance. Valdez was content on just making contact with Tamayo, he needed to get close to get more leverage on his shots. He could have gone to the body more, he's usually a good body puncher but I guess Tamayo's style didn't allow him to do it that often. He seems to want to throw every punch with power, but he doesn't need to and has to work on that. He's just wasting energy in doing that. Unless you're a big puncher (like Kovalev or Beterbiev for example) you should try to have some shots that are not to hard and then come back with a hard shot (it's hard to explain in sentences-words lol). He should practice setting up his shots better as well. But unlike most, I was quite impressed with Valdez.

Hmm, interesting. Valdez only went the distance for the second time in 16 fights. Was Tamayo just that good?

Valdez is average, goes life and death with bums. Doesnt set up his punches, he just throws everything "hard" and in a way his opponents kinda feel his power and are able to take it. Verdejo just runs through fighters, even with 1 hand.

Carefuly matched he can get a title, but he wont go further than 130 with his lack of power.

He hasn't gone life and death with anyone. Just because he went the distance doesn't mean he struggled. But judging by your avatar you're Puerto Rican so of course your going to hate on Valdez. Instead how about give some solid fair criticism, that's how fighters will learn and improve; not with haters. Valdez has also been with better opposition than Verdejo. Just because Najera was undefeated doesn't mean he was any good, if you've seen him before Verdejo you would know. You're probably scouting Valdez for Verdejo, when that fight probably won't ever happen. Valdez fights at 126 and will probably top out at 135/140. Meanwhile, Verdejo can be at 140 as early as next year. Jose Ramirez is the Mexican fighter you should be scouting. Jose Ramirez will beat Verdejo, we can beat on it when it happens.
Verdejo is not as good as Cotto when he was coming up. Jose Pedraza is the best up and coming PR fighter at the moment.

I thought Valdez looked very good. He really landed some hard shots on Tamayo and Ruben kept coming.
