Mandatory challenger Francisco “Chihuas” Rodriguez (17-2-1, 11 KOs) travelled Sunday to the Philippines where he’ll challenge Donnie “Ahas” Nietes (35-1-4, 21 KOs) for the WBO flyweight championship on July 11 at the Waterfront Hotel Casino in Cebu City, providing fight fans a glimpse of how seriously he’s pursuing the quest to become the first fighter to beat the longest reigning Filipino world champion.

Great move! Rodriguez will be well adjusted by the time the bell rings.

Chihuas can pull it off if he stays disciplined early and waits for Nietes to fade in the later rounds. Once he applies pressure I have a feeling the veteran champion will fold. Tough fight nonetheless, Nietes is elusive at times and picks his shots very well. He's the Philippines longest reigning champion in their boxing history and that takes skill and dedication to his craft.

I once read an article where Nietes is one of the type of fighters that doesn't balloon in between fights on purpose, that way when training camps begin, he's ahead of the curve and can primarily focus on training for his fights.

By the way what is Mr. David talking about? Chihuas vs Nietes is one of the best fights the sport has to offer in those weights. Menayothin is extremely talented and precise, but the younger Rodriguez Jr. is far more proven. Especially since Chihuas is campaigning at Nietes' weight class, while Wanheng is the WBC champion at a lower weight class. In fact, aside from an exciting yet extremely limited Navoa, Wanheng has no other good name and is miles behind Rodriguez in terms of resume and over all career.
