Comments Thread For: Kovalev: Stevenson is Piece of ****, Ready For Ward

WBO/IBF/WBA light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev (27-0-1 24 KOs) is training hard for his scheduled mandatory defense against Nadjib Mohammedi, scheduled for July 25th at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

There is one belt outside of Kovalev's grasp, the WBC championship held by Adonis Stevenson of Canada. The two sides have been unable to reach any agreement. Kovalev's promoter even requested a unification purse bid from the WBC - who approved the request - but then Main Events withdrew from the purse bid after it was clear they would likely get outbid.

It's so annoying Kovalev vs Stevenson isn't happening. Easily one of the best fights in boxing (even though Stevenson's stock has dropped a bit).

They "ducked" the purse bid because Kovalev has an exclusive deal with HBO. It has nothing whatsoever to do with them being afraid of a match with Stevenson. Trust me, Haymon and his team knew all about this going in. They knew Duva and co. wouldn't be able to participate in the purse bid, so it was nothing but a PR stunt to them. They're the ones who really don't want the fight. If Duva and Kovalev didn't want it, why were they trying to take Stevenson and Yvon Michel to court over their supposed agreement to fight last year? You're a dummy.

So cuz they were gonna get "outbid" they pulled out of the purse bid?

That woulda guaranteed them a WBC championship unification fight, whether they got outbid or not.

Sadly Kovalev declined the purse bid but does look good if he truly wants to face Ward. Kovalev is well rounded in all areas and that's not including his power. It will would be the best fight out there period! I don't care about Mayweather vs #49... Or Pacman vs another fighter with no damn shot... Kovalev vs Ward is the fight to see, next to Canelo/Cotto.

What is supposed to happen after Kovalev fights upcoming mandatory? Isn't it supposed to go to a purse bid again or something like that?

So it's HBO's fault that this fight is not happening?

Yeah, its really annoying and Main Events should've let it happen but this is more about Main Events trying to stay in business and not get swallowed by Haymon. Its basically small business vs big corporation.
