Not only is the WBC belt a major world title, it's arguably the most coveted in boxing; it's a huge accomplishment to win this title and a bigger bargaining chip in securing fights in the future. The titleholder receives the lion's share of the purse (when defending it) and it practically guarantees huge paydays. Why a fighter would give that up is beyond logic and good business sense.

It's really moot though because the WBC isn't going to strip Wilder barring some ridiculous situation where Wilder is fighting guys ranked 100 in the world to avoid fighting Sasha. We have to look at this from the perspective of these sanctioning bodies. Do they want to spend the next ten years sanctioning Wilder-Joshua, Wilder-Fury, Wilder-Jennings fights or sanction a 35-year old Not-marketable-in-the-West Alexander Povetkin to fight another unwatchable travesty against a 40-year old Wlad Klitschko before becoming totally irrelevant?
