  • Golovkin Training to make 154

According to Bad Left Hook, Golovkin is trying to make 154lbs in case he gets a call to face Mayweather.

    Here's the story:

Gennady Golovkin, a career middleweight, is reported to have already begun training to cut down to 154lbs just in case Floyd Mayweather decides to call his name for his September bout. His trainer, Abel Sanchez, has reportedly told WBN that Golovkin can safely make the weight if he's given enough time to prepare. So looking towards the fight he's been craving, Gennady appears to be preparing for the "just in case" scenario of a Mayweather fight. He might just be spinning his wheels here, but you can't fault the guy for trying.

It's probably a long shot for Gennady to land this fight (and the proposed Froch fight fizzled after Carl went silent on negotiations) but Gennady is said to have even accepted a proposed rehydration clause mentioned by Mayweather Sr. just to make the Mayweather fight happen. Now it'll be up to Floyd Mayweather Jr. to determine if he's going to go out with a ****, taking a big risk against a fearsome puncher, or ride cruise control with Karim Mayfield or Andre Berto - two opponents Mayweather says he's 100% serious about. If Gennady can make the weight and Mayweather is to live up to his word of leaving the sport by fighting the best, this should be a pretty easy decision to make.

So let's play a game of "what if" for a moment. If Mayweather were to fight Golovkin at 154 and win a decision, how would that alter his legacy in your eyes, if at all?
The bolded part has caught my attention. It would be so awesome if this fight is made.

Doesn't enhance it at all. GGG is chasing money. If he accepts this rehydration clause it might bite him in the ass. I'd prefer him go down and fight someone like Lara before Floyd, but i know I know, Lara doesn't do great ratings.

Agreed! The PPV would generate alot of hype. I'd give Floyd all the credit in the world. I'd prefer this over a manny rematch.

I don't think it would bite him too much since he seems to always be in good shape. Glenn Johnson is a good example. He only had like 8 weeks to go from 175 down to 168 and it didn't weaken him whatsoever. GGG seems to have a body type that losing weight or gaining weight wouldn't affect him too much because of his style. Could i be wrong? Absolutely but i don't think he'd be that much weaker compared to say Jones vs Tarver 1 and Tarver vs Hopkins where they had to lose 20-30 pounds.

seems pretty needless. the mayweather and de la hoya fights are pipe dreams, alvarez and cotto won't go near him even at 154 lbs, and lara has already agreed to come up to middleweight. losing muscle mass is unhealthy, especially for a 30-something, so i hope he knows what he's doing

I can't see it happening while Floyd is still on his showtime contract but I would love to see it if it could be made.

Must be a new training method.

If this is truly the case, there should be no excuses for why GGG can't fight Cotto or Canelo at a catchweight.......correct?

I think the rehydration, not weight loss would affect him in a negative way.
