More than a year and a half has passed since Magomed Abdusalamov lost to Mike Perez, a fight that left him in a coma and has rendered him partially paralyzed and forever changed.

There have been multiple battles going on since then. Abdusalamov struggles to live in a markedly diminished capacity. His family, particularly his wife, struggles to care for him and for their children.

And then there is the legal battle.

An attorney representing Abdusalamov had filed a lawsuit against the New York State Athletic Commission, alleging that the commission’s physicians had failed to properly diagnose the brain injury he suffered in 10 rounds against Perez while examining him after the bout, and that they had not sent him to the hospital via ambulance even after his condition was worsening. Perfect. First the State Athletic Commission screws the pooch, and now they blame the fighter's people for this tragedy. Reform is long, long over due for the New York State Athletic Commission.

theres definately some neglicence if he had to get a taxi to the hospital not the ambulance.

they don't want to accept blame, even partially, because it leaves them wide open for many more suits

During the fight he kept complaining about something head related. JDJ kept ignoring it. Whether that is what harmed him IDK but during the fight I kept noticing his complaints and nothing being done.

Really hard case to win for Abdusalomov and his family. They do have some things going for them but they would have to show that NY state neglected their duty to the fighter and that they acted in a manner that was contrary to what most other jurisdictions would have done. It's typically hard for athletes to win cases against sports commissions because of the implied consent thar comes with taking part in a dagerous sport

You would assume so. I dont know what the law says or what NYSAC are obligated to do, but this seems pretty basic.

They failed in their duty to provide adequate medical care to a fighter.

In hindsight the fight should have been stopped earlier, but during the fight I didnt think it was as drastic as it obviously was. The team know their fighter better than me though and maybe they should have taking more care to notice the signs.

Is it time that ringside doctors are given power over more than just cuts and injuries? Perhaps specifically train them to notice signs of brain injury, have them spend a period of time in both corners watching the fighters and pay close attention to signs in the ring that something seems wrong. Giving the responsibility to the team of the fighter seems like vested interest. They want to win, they want their fighter to win and they are focusing on the technical side of the fight. Probably not the best people to be solely responsible for noticing subtle signs of brain injury.

Wouldn't most jurisdictions provide an ambulance on site in case of incidents like this?

It is a requirement over here since the Michael Watson case.
