Comments Thread For: Malignaggi: I was Disappointed

The evidence remains long after the fight he was forced to leave behind. Paul Malignaggi was looking forward to a May 29 showdown with Danny O’Connor in what would have served as a rust-shaking performance, his first fight in more than 13 months.

A cut over his left eye forced the former two-division titlist to withdraw from the fight date, which meant missing out on an opportunity to fight in his old stomping grounds in Brooklyn, New York. It also meant having nothing to show for his time spent training while also juggling his various broadcasting responsibilities.

“It was disappointing,” Malignaggi admits of the fight falling through. “I was proud of myself that I was able to make time to train. The fact that I was doing it, it was satisfying. So it was disappointing that it didn’t happen.” [Click Here To Read More]

I'm not happy about this universal dash to 147. Don't get me started on catchweights too.

The Peterson fight is definitely unfinished business in my eyes. Whilst wins against Matthysse, Khan and Judah made him #1 at 140, I only advocate moving up when you have truly cleaned up the division or if you are killing yourself to make weight. That means taking care of the contenders that emerge whilst you are top of the tree.

Crawford and Provodnikov would be bouts that if taken would further cement Garcia as the true #1 light welterweight.

Swear once Mayweather is gone a ton of these fighters will have been chasing a shadow by moving up to 147.

If Judah and Peterson can trouble Garcia, or outright embarrass him like Herrera did, then Malignaggi can certainly ruffle some feathers until he complains about being robbed again (Diaz I, Broner).

I think he is entertaining and enjoy his fights but I'm not a massive Garcia fan. Been critical of him recently. However, there no need for a rematch. He beat Peterson just fine.

And you can't stay in a division forever just cause new people show up. If that's the case, they'd never be able to move up. And there's ZERO chance HBO would work with PBC for a Matt or Prov fight and vice versa. I like the move to 147.

It's a deep division and if a contender like Crawford ends up being able to fight a PBC fighter, they can make the fight pretty easily at 140 again or 147.

i agree to disagree. garcia doesnt need to fight peterson again cause even though garcia won the fight. yes after watching it again i see garcia winning the fight. but peterson handed garcia the win, gave away too many early rounds. peterson outright ran the first 7 rounds no attempt to counter or anything. he did punish garcia effectively in the later rounds but too little too late. imo even though garcia cant make 140 anymore and moving up to 147. he is going to have trouble with any welter weight. not even the elite. that 0 is going to go.
